Which to choose? Mini Skid Steer

So does anyone have a larger unit that uses def or complies with emissions regulations?
Is it really THAT much of an extra headache from a cost/maintenance standpoint?
Im looking at a low hour SK 850 and a low hour SK 755 (which doesn't have emissions reg stuff, of course) that I found a good price on. Any thoughts?

I would verify your ability to install the weight kit in that serial number sk755, then grab the sk755.

Landed a sweet deal on a lower hour SK 850. What size trailer would you guys use to pull just this unit with a brush mower attachment?
I know that a 7000 lb. tandem axle utility trailer is sufficient but I think that a 16' might be longer than I need. Id like to keep everything as compact and light as possible.

I use a 16 ft utility trailer for our sk650. Its longer than I need but its nice to be able to take our forks, bucket, and bmg without things being cramped. Sometimes we also throw a log or two on the trailer with the mini. It never hurts to have a bit more hauling capacity.

Depends on the length of your mower, but I'd get a 14k lbs 14ft Dump trailer. You'll likely never regret spending the extra cash for a dump trailer. Its one of the most versatile pieces of equipment I own.

We are hopefully going with a 16’ trailer for this season so we can carry our bucket, root grapple, mats, fuel and everything with us all the time. Projects with a lot of wood we will hire a log truck smaller projects the wood has space on the truck.

yeah. It will only be hauling the unit with a CID brush cutter attached and either a toothed gp bucket or a grapple rake at any given time. No logs or debris.

Get measuring Wes, if you want as as small as possibly. When access is tight, inches matter. Having a small trailer that is also good for something else, when not being used for tight access, coupled with another larger, multi-purpose trailer might be the ticket.

I have my mini on a 6x12' tandem, but also have a 5x8' with a 5k axle, with the grapple overhang the bed, into the tongue area. When I have more room, I make use of it. When i need compact, I have that. The small trailer becomes a portable chip box, moved with the mini, along with the chipper to places a chip truck would never make it.

Seems to me that versatility is the key. Its not always in one package. Lots of times, things are market/ owner dependent.

I agree. My business is probably a little different than a lot of the guys on here. I'm not a "tree guy" per say. It's a niche business. All that I do is brush clearing and small tree/invasive removal on residential and small commercial frontage. I won't be hauling logs and debris with my equipment as most of it will be cut and mulched on site.
What kind of mini skid do you have? I was looking at a 12x6 tandem. I think it will fit just fine. I'm just wondering if there will be enough weight on the tongue if the mini skid is sitting right on top of the axles.

Boxer 532dx.

You simply pull the machine forward to give a bit of tongue weight to the trailer.

I load my bucket in front, and have a toolbox with brake battery in the tongue.
Leaves me with a bit of room for a ladder, arbor trolley, hand truck, etc.

A box for tools, grease gun, spare trailer light bulbs, tie down straps, etc, is nice to have for a dedicated trailer.

Yeah. It's just that with the mower in front of the unit it puts the unit right on top of the axles. The mower is 675 lbs. So it would give some weight forward on the tongue. Just not sure if it would be enough

An over-mower storage 'loft' might be useful. A jobsite toolbox that stores fuel/ fluids, tools, chocks, I use a block just shorter than the frame height in the rear that supports the tail of the trailer when offloading/loading, lug wrench, tie-downs, spare lightbulbs.

A bolt-down loft frame that can be lifted off with the mini could be sweet if other need arises. A bit of framing steel, expanded metal, fabrication and paint. Nothing extravagent. Tool box could be lifted on and off with the mini. Keep your versatility.

You have a lot of space to use, unless you really only need a dedicated mini/mower trailer.

That's a great idea. The trailer would be primarily used just to haul the machine. I like the tool box idea though

A loader bucket would possibly be a useful item.

Could fit on the rack, too.

While having some fab done, put your ramps beneath the trailer, and consider a simple ladder bracket. Stake pockets on my trailer can accomodate side-boards OR tie-down straps' hooks. I'd rather have both work at the same time. Going to the welder next week to fix the fender (loading logs without sideboard and banged it), so I'll make that happen with 4 D-rings. Stitch in time, saves 9.

Consider protecting your trailer lights while having some fab done.

Safety cone holder.

The mini can easily lift the rack by rope, if you have an overhead anchor point. Might be easier than lifting directly.

I would recommend the sk1550. It's essentially a full size skid steer with a much smaller footprint. It's dimensions aren't that much more than the smaller machines buts it's twice as capable. The sk755 is a great machine, just not enough lifting capacity. If you're thinking about a sk1050 just pay a little extra and get the sk1550 with the weight kit a guard kit of course.

Yep. After all it's just money right? Lol
