When is a tree really dead?

Perhaps we should delineate betwixt compromised and total un- ignitable to viewed life form and its arrangements mechanically able to support life type states.

That question was asked by a friend of mine who is going for her PhD... I remember hearing some definition about the organization within the structure of the tree from Shigo.. Anyone have that or something better...
Many cultures believe nothing is ever dead. Proof is there for that thought and science.

My Dad taught as probably many, eat food taken/forced for nourishment , starving people would appreciate , and don't disrespect by wasting his money etc.
.
I handed down those as secondaries , but primarily need to know only so much energy being passed around , so something died/gave up young or food for them or even arm so you could eat... Gas as a proof, only thing left of some ancients is the energy for movement etc. trapped in black goop that even eases movement etc.
.
So I tried to hand down the guilt trip , Perhaps backfired as one has Master's Engineering now(brag)!
.
I wouldn't call wood pile as wood life, but rather fuel. But am sure it is teaming with other life. Love how especially our old Live Oaks surround self of own rich ecosystem teaming with life.
