Looks like Grifola frondosa, but Grif is an annual bracket(appears once a year, then degrades quickly) , so I cant understand why it has lasted so long.

Unless you stored it in a dry place?

Also I knocked it off with a 5 pound hammer.
It was very solid.

I agree it looks a little like Grifola as sen in luley's book. I've seen that one waaay up in a willow oak.

Where on the tree was the conk found?

as best as I can remember...hmmm, main trunk, definately up a good ways from the base. Thanks

all the books say grifola infects a lot lower on the stem.

But not many fungi can read...
