A must have for every Fall Climb.

SZ

Blood stopper kit, a steel sideline biner with nylon webbing, 1-2 spare biners depending on if I need to double crotch, 20- 25' lanyard-velocity with hrc and a small pulley, and a small micro prussik on lanyard...oh and 3 non locking biners stuffed in the webbing of the saddle for tool/item hooks.

Today--

Doug fir removal, lost top 12 years ago in ice storm.
Branches growing toward clearing/ house. Edge tree.

hand saw

bloodstopper

steel triple lock biner

MS 192t for 1/2 of job
MS 361 for 1/4 of job

12 speedline slings (loop runners and screwgate and non- locking slide 'biners

few loose 'biners

GriGri with triple lock biner for SRT choked climbline/ emergency descent line, spare triple lock for terminating rope to harness for DdRT

shoulda had a small pulley for pulling up gear/ saws/ ropes (seems easier on body to pull down repetitively than pulling upwards, plus if you drop the rope and it run through the pulley, you have a pretty good chance to grab both ropes and arrest the falling saw/ gear/ rope

Hey Hollenreich,ho do you keep from spilling?and what did you offer the tree rat for the photo op.?wait let ne guess..i got it - NUTS -.only things on saddle,4 biners,2 prussic slings,1 web sling, repell ring,lanyard,0200t as needed and ditty bag w/electrical tape and combo snot rag/bandaid and ciggs and hand saw.need more ? -"see groundman".

extra posi-locking biners, sewn sling, hand saw, fixe pulley, bungee tether for saw (which is great for keeping ur saw lanyard out of the saw teeth because it scrunches down to half its length when u hang your saw, but they advertise it as being this great tool that minimizes the shock load when you drop your saw and it catches on the lanyard.... which is such a HUGE problem!

Hello all. So I've been reading through this and it seems folks are carrying a lot of different things on their saddles, many of which are specific to the task at hand.

What are the basic "necessary" items that every climber should have regardless of the task, ie. spare biners, first aid kit, web slings, etc.?

I'm gonna be making a small gear purchase and want to make sure I get the necessities to complete my kit.

What are some other secondary items that aren't absolutely necessary but can make your climb a little easier, in case I have some money left over?

I'm already thinking of getting rid of my small throw line pouch for a folding cube but I'm open to suggestions.

No big ticket items please and Holly....I already have a few of those bottle koozies.

What I do is strip my saddle down to the basics. Petzl sequoia SRT,15ft Lanyard one small carritool to hold loop, A bent gate biner for chain saw, Silky Sugoi, Bloodstopper, FS retriever ring, an extra biner , A mutitool friction saver (a BSnMW idea, fig8/friction saver/backup eyeNeye).
Then I add what I need for that particular tree.
I used to be the one with all kinds of bling. I just took the be prepared for anything apprach and had EVERYTHING on my saddle until I saw my folly. (a 2lb saddle weiging 20lbs)+a saw!

Hey BarnHouse,

You've got the right idea with your list of basic items...depending on the type of throwline pouch you have you can use that on your saddle for your ditty bag. Stuff several webbing slings in it at least, they are cheap and ridiculously versatile. They can be used as backup lanyards or stirrups for awkward reaches, they can be used to redirect your rope, or to fashion a false crotch, and they can be even used to tie off limbs or hang a pole saw. Then it would be good to have several extra triple locking carabiners because they can all be used in these situations.

The fact that I have now heard of several snaps opening and disengaging makes me reluctant to use or recommend them for lanyards anymore, you might as well just terminate in a triple locking biner.

I think it is a good idea as mentioned above that you have some type of blood stopper, even a bandana, just something, stuff it in your bag. I also think a cell phone is a must...

So, these few things, your saw + lanyard, your climbing setup, and you'll be in good shape! (PPE goes without saying...)

I don't like climbing with extra crabs. They seem to get in the way, always grabbing onto twigs, pinching my waist, and just generally fowling everything up. And the garlic butter sauce on my fingers makes the climbing hitch slip.

Or were you talking about krabs like carabiners? Ha!

Nobody likes a smart a$$, right.
