What was your best lesson from TCIA EXPO 2013

I just got back from the TCIA EXPO. It was super fun, especially to meet some of the Buzzers face to face.

The best thing I heard was in one of the safety sessions.

The speaker questioned the the thought that goes... "Hey, its tree work... We'll all get hurt eventually."

He said, and I agree, that this does not have to be the case.

This line of reasoning, while sounding mathematically sound on the surface, is not actually true. There are, in fact, many many retired tree guys who never got hurt.

It gave me a bit more hope to focus on safety and in creating this culture/mindset within my crew.

How bout you? What was your best takeaway?

I liked meeting a few new friends and lots of old ones. Not to mention giving shameless book plugs after my talks were over!

But then I am simple like that!

xmans and Todd Kramers crane seminar! (Classroom) All good Tony, got your book, will crack it open maybe on the way home tomorrow when my wife's driving! We headed to myrtle beach Saturday til tomorrow for a mini vacation! 16 hour drive back home to the stinking cold! Had an awesome time as usual!

The thing Ill remember is from Jeff Hammond. He was doing the class talking about team work. He is with Nascar. He mentioned the safety and was commenting on the planning that goes into it. The people that work in the pit crews are taught to jump if they are going to be hit by a car....an escape route....knowing what you are going to do if something does go wrong. I never noticed this when watching the races before. We can learn a lot from those not in our industry if we break down what they are doing.

The "safety... It's personal" talk was most impactful because of the time to share "your story" with your neighbors. It was good to reflect and learn from your own mistakes as well as others. I wish I had been able to attend thurs - Saturday. The Friday only pass was just a blur. Too much to do in too little time!

I learned that I want to go visit Dutch in Cocolamus, PA. Y'ALL WIT ME?? Sam, we have already started putting grease boards in the trucks with the customer address and the phone number. I have been pitching the idea of the ArbAid first aid kit to the boss as well.

I got to meet some of my "Tree Heros". Jerry Beranek and Tom Dunlap.

Tony's Knotless Rigging module was awesome as well. All in all an informative 3 days. I bought the TCIA book Best Practices for SRT and am almost finished with it. Looking forward to taking that plunge and adding a new technique to my bag of tricks.

TonyM,

Thanks for the kind words. If you ever make it to visit Dutch, be sure to call. I get the first, third, fifth.....rounds!

Hey guys and girls,

I've never spoken in front of a large crowd like that.

I was told, maybe 150 in attendance.

I've never had training or experience with that, I just talked about what I knew and told it like it was.

So.... with that in mind, how did I do?

Be gentle if you want me to continue.... On second thought,..... don't and I'll come back stronger.

Except for the mic acting up at the beginning you did a great job!

Did anyone receive a request for feedback from TCIA? It seems that they only got a few responses--maybe the survey did not reach all attendees?

This is important because they don't surf treebuzz and elsewhere to get comments, so attendees have to make an extra effort to have a say in what they do next time. So if you didn't get a chance to express yourself before, please do now!

Thanks; that makes you one of the 15% (so far). Comments made to TCIA are incredibly useful.
