What to wear?

Tomorrow is being advertised as being the record cold day for at least the time I have been alive. I'm pretty excited. They say -35 wind chill and skin freezes within 30 seconds at that temp. I can't wait.

What's all use to combat this "freezing" thing?

Plane, train or automobile. About 75* here today, our lows are averaging in the low 50's. Most days I need to wear a long sleeve shirt until about 10AM.

Go with several small layers, rather than one or two really big layers. Long zippers on shirts are good so you can open them to cool off, and close to conserve that heat. The kind that have a short turtle neck are good. A super thin hat will keep heat in if you put that on under your helmet. Make sure your ears are covered. Thin liner gloves add good level of warmth to regular work gloves...and for a decent price!

No cotton...at least not next to your skin. Especially in your shoes. If you are prone to getting cold feet, avoid cotton like the plague. Try these.... SmartWool

Again, for socks, two small are better than one big. Something very thin underneath a medium weight sock is good. If nothing else, put a thin pair of dress socks...you know, the black ones you wear to church...put them under some other socks. They'll do way better than just 2 pairs of cotton socks.

Don't tie shoes too tight. Blood needs to circulate! Same with the hands. If the gloves are too constricting, you'll get cold faster.

Keep moving. This keeps the blood moving throughout the body, and as you move your body creates heat.

ENJOY IT!!! The cold makes you tougher!

I, like Rocky, have been lucky w/ working in Beautiful weather. I do feel sorry for you all in the NE. I made the comment at work today that if I were up there, Id be unemployed as I WOULDN'T work in that.

I dont mind some cold, but there is a limit.

Nick,

That is an amazing jacket. Someone wore one when they were traveling and the TSA folks at the airport flipped out. Thought that they had a real te**o*ist around. I wonder what they would have done if someone showed up with battery powered socks?

The most important thing to remember is that the more cotton you wear the colder you will be. Ditch the cotton and get fleece. Don't forget to eat a good breakfast and drink lots of fluids during the day.

Don't focus so much on the wind chill number. The real concern is the air temp. I've winter camped on the MN/Ontario border for close to 20 years and I don't know anyone who has gotten frost bite.

I'll start a new thread with the Cold WEather Comfort article from Arborist news.

I used to work at a store in Chicago called Erehwon Mountain Outfitters. It was like REI. When the winter olympics were in Salt Lake, we got a TON of customers coming in that were upper-class wealthy people looking for the warmest clothes. This lady came in because her husband said they needed that jacket while they were spectating the ski events and whatnot. I thought she was joking, but I entertained her anyway. That's a 500.00 jacket! Showed her every thing. She called the hubby on the cell phone. 5 minutes later, she bought two! One for each of them.

One of the other sales guys jokingly wrote his number down on a piece of paper and handed it to her. She asked what that was for. He said, "when you come back from Salt Lake, I'll give you $150 for the pair of jacket."

3 weeks later he got a call and the deal of a lifetime!!!!

I think the concept is silly. If you are smart about what you wear, you shouldn't need that stuff. But if I could get one for 150, I'd buy it in a heartbeat!
