What camera is the best?

Last time I needed a digital camera 3 yrs ago, Buzzers recomended the Sony Cybershot. I bought one and it was good.

But it's on the blink now (the tele lens won't retract) and it may be too costly to fix. Wondering what is good these days...something small, reliable, taking good quality pics, for general use and on tree jobs.

I'm not sure if it's as small as you want, but I'm using a 2 year old Canon S2 ls Powershot.

It's 10x zoom.

If you use the link in my signature, the oregon coast album and many others were with that camera.

The fungi album shows how it did even without macro - focuses to 1.9"

The newer model has a 12x zoom.

I will never go with less than 10x zoom again after seeing the difference of being able to pull objects in close.

That one has held up bumping around in a case on my belt for 2 years of hiking.

With many good brands to choose from, I'm sure you will find what you need soon.

Here's one page of many about it...

Nikon Mini 10x zoom Coolpix - about $400

The zoom is a good point. I have a sony cybershot with only 3x optical. But, it is very small, turns on very fast and can snap a shot 2 secs after opening. That isgood for those "on the fly" shots.

It's this one:

I use a Cannon Powershot A610. Works great for shots and can vid small scences. Now all I have to do is fiddle faddle around with pics and small clips and get them on the buzz.

I just noticed something looking for digital camera reviews.

It's a Nikon Coolpix S10

Looks like a small 6 mega pixel camera.

And apparently with a swivel 10x zoom lens.

After being able to photograph details up in trees without having to be up there, I can't see 3x to 6x zoom as an option anymore.

This Nikon looks like a small camera alternative I wasn't aware of.

Nothing beats the skills of a trained photographer....

The big buck SLR (fuji S2pro) i have doesnt neccesarily make better pics as an 'simple' digicam if i mess it up..... But the good part is i had already a 70-300mm lens and a 28-105mm. Also i can use my 'old' nikon flash by TTL (through the lens)messurement. I only still really do need a wide angle 15mm lens.....

With the newest generation SLR's you also need the modern digital lenses and flashers. thats why i chose the S2pro for, i could use my nikon AF zoom lenses and flasher.

Its so nice to zoom in to 300mm (450mm effective because normal lenses have to x 1.5 for focuslength) and still be able to crop heavily in the pic.....but one need a treepod with that lens...

I was whispering to my son the other night after reading his reply. I was going to reply too, with...

"chee cho chong chee, chay, chee cho chong"

(Did you ever see that segment with Wesley Snipes in Demolition Man?)

Anyhow, I wasn't making fun of his information - it was just outside my technical vocabulary, and reminded me of that one scene with Snipes.

So I'm not poking fun at you R_Schra ...

Thanks for the information.

I'm slowly but surely, learning about the new camera stuff.

Shutter delay seems to be an important factor on choosing a camera. If they are anything above 5MP then the picture is going to be good. Mine has a big shutter delay and is a pain in the ****. My brother is a photographer and has a Canon something expensive, takes 18shots a second!

I'm looking at getting a new camera, something small. I like the look of this as it has wide angle and panorama stitch. Can't find any info on shutter delay though. Anyone got one??

With my camera Rupe, I have noticed that with a high speed memory card, it has increased my ability to take multiple shots very quickly. I have been shooting my wifes dog running through Agility comps. You only have about a second to snatch a picture before the dog has passed. I can usually get 7 or 8 shots per run.

For tree work I primarly use my:
Canon Power Shot s70.

I also have a Canon EOS Rebel. That one is great because all the lenses I have will work with it.
Both camaras are old by now but the quality is very good on each one.

So the shutter delay is to do with the memory card size??

That does make some sense, and if so that is something I didn't know. I'll look into it.
Thank you.

My Canon Powershot does not have panorama stitch, but the software that came with it, does a great job.

So that would be a cool camera function, but many top brands, may have software to accomodate the stitch.

Hi guys. I miss you too. Been real busy lately and had to rearrange some priorities. I'll take the compliment above any day.

I'm waiting for a reasonably-priced digital body which I can stick my Contax Zeiss glass onto.

How faster the cam can store the pic the faster it can take a new... Thats the point.

Some cams have a internal backup and can take several until the pics are stored away.

With the fuji SLR i have its 7 pics in a row i can make. If very short shutter time, i have to wait till the first pic is stored of 7 before making another one. In the meanwhile it will store the temporary other ones. With lower shuttertime it can make more continuesly pics. But on uge filesize its just 7. On smallest filesize it can make a nice sequence of more. When i will buy me a faster memory it will be even better.
