weight of cubic yard of chip

Got a new f-450, trying to figure out the max size of box to place on it- any ideas, or experiences with the same truck. I got it with a 12' flat bed dump. I heard a yard goes for 550#

A while ago I asked a couple of chip body manufacturers how much they calculated when they designed a box. They used 500-550#/yd. Before I built my chip box I did a test. I waited until I had an oak takedown. Then I chipped a bunch of log wood and took out six ro so five gallon buckets of chips. I weighed the buckets, deducted the weight of the buckets, added the total weight and converted to #/yd. It came out between 500-550#/yd.

Are you going to go full-time tree work?

I have been all year Tom, and loving every minute, oh wait that darn cotten wood I pruned and the willow, well almost every minute /forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif, Tom I was thinking 12-8-5, or 5.5, that would be roughly 17-19 yards if square

Tom, not sure how heavy the box will be yet because I haven't figured out the material to use yet. Currently, the truck has 3' sides constructed of 2x12's and weighs 9100#, gvw 15000. I figure I will license the truck for 20000# and should be fine

Mangoes, I like that idea, but the funds are not there right now.

Glen,

You can license the truck at any weight that you want but you can only haul as much as the chassis is built to haul. The axle GVW and vehicle GVW should be on the door column sticker. But you already knew all of this right? :)

Well............... I guess that was a gray area, thats what I thaught initially but I listened to a poor source. So to set the story straight, I have to build a box that will hold only enough to bring the weight of the vehicle to 15000#, including chipper? what are the penalties of being over weight, and also how observant are the authorities, obviously not very, considering never tangling with them in five years.

I was scaled twice and both times they started by looking at the GVW tag on the vehicle. In both cases the load on the front axle was OK but the rear was overweight. The officer told me that there are separate fines for front and rear overweights. If you ever fail a weight check you'll have to unload the truck before you move it. then you'll have to pick up the off-load.

The GVW of the vehicle trumps the licensed weight.

It seems like every spring, at least, there is a massive truck check in the TC area where they stop every truck over pickup size and check them.

I guess it really depends on your local area. I was told that the officer will look at the GVWR and the registered weight as well. Both have to meet or exceed the needs. If either is low you will have a problem. They just don't seem to bother with smaller trucks here. It also helps to have a new looking rig! /forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I was bornded there but never spent much time there afterwards (not that I didn't love it; I think St. Paul is one of the handsomest cities I've ever seen. Great-great-grandpa Sattler had some large amount of acreage for his dairy farm and the farm house still stands (so for as I know) third house toward Highland Park, on the west side of Hamline, from the corner of Bayard).

So, Tom, every spring just before the frost leaves the ground they want to make sure their investment in streets doesn't get harmed any worse than possible/necessary?

In Ontario I can take a say Dodge 3500 SRW, and register it for 24000lbs GCW and some how squeeze that payload into the back of the truck, get pulled over and not get a fine.

My previous employer had a 1981 Int. Single axle 5 ton w/a hiab and dump box. Truck was registered for 60k manufacterer GVW, well I forget, but most single axles are around 30k. Got scaled once with a MOUNTAIN of wood on. the trucks dump box was rubbing the tires. MTO said, 'wow your boss is paying too much ins. and licensing for this truck, should tell him to reduce the registration'. Not a word about weight.

Settle down there you tophopping mad man, pics will come as soon as the truck gets ready. I have it sitting at metal doctors in white bear waiting for some fabrication. You better find me a job big enough to fill that bad boy!

Thanks all for the input, I am making a box that may be a tad overweight for gvw if I chip nothing but pure oak logs, but hey who in thier right mind would do that /forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif This truck is going to be so sweet I just can't stand it!

Just have to add my two cents.
In this day and age you don't want to give anyone a reason to pull you over. You guys know we get alot of traffic in our yard and talk to alot of people everyday. ALL the cities are looking for rev and Edina/Eagan,& DOT are equally as bad. Watch out!

Now, if you work for each other is the old guy (john) the groundie??

Well I guess, if Glen is the other guy....

then I must be the old guy. /forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Ill ground for Murse anytime.
