I collected this fine specimen (ethically) from a logging job at a local ski area years ago. Finally got around to stripping the bark, sanding, and putting the finishing touches on. Light sanding, and another coat or two of polyurethane and it’s DONE. This work of art was over 130 years in the making….. that makes it valuable right?! It’s a one of a kind!……B7A4B6CF-AF6E-4663-863F-82DB4F58F8DA.jpeg4D5A8324-85AA-44D6-A2C8-3EE915C1AA1E.jpeg6107ABE2-1649-4BF0-8883-AEFA671E0E92.jpegAF43866A-00B2-4F69-8D54-CC2E12D230C7.jpeg

It was dead on arrival…. so based on where i cut it, it was either a lodgepole pine or a spruce….. the blue staining is consistent with mountain pine beetle damage/fungus to lodgepoles…But it’s girth and short stature wasn’t consistent with most lodgepole pines….. Those beetles devastated whole mountain sides of lodgepole pines in the Rockies.

We get some pretty short stout lodgepole pines at higher elevation near Tahoe.

Beautiful! Cute pup too

Oil based semi gloss…… it’s been a decade and a half since I got out of finish carpentry/cabinetry, so I went off of a neighbor’s suggestion (he’s a very talented carpenter/artist). I’m happy with the results, especially since the finish work was done outside on my deck. I’m lucky the weather/wind cooperated.
