You came to the right place! There is a wealth of knowledge in the archives, offering many hundreds of hours of reading material if one were so inclined. Good start with the TCC, that alone should be able to get you off the ground safely.

My little piece of advice is to always know the history of your gear, which means buying new. Start with a simple system and build off that. Whenever you try something new, practice it a few feet off the ground until it becomes second nature. Good luck and welcome to The Buzz!

By the way, the search function sucks. If you get stuck with a particular concept, don't hesitate to ask. There are no stupid questions. (to an extent...)

At least Wesspur, if not other retailers, has some beginner climbing packages, but you might be better off with some more custom choices. You might be able to pick up some stuff from the TreeBay section.

The Tree Climber Companion is a good starting point. Sherrilltree.com has some good resources online for knots and equipment usage. Their catalog has lots of good little tutorials on using the gear, etc.

Something important to know is that spikes/ hooks/ spurs are for tree removal climbing. For Rec (Recreational) climbing you will climb up the ropes installed in the tree for the climb, or climb branch to branch using rope systems for safety.

There are sites devoted to Rec climbing. I think that CanopyChatter. While TreeBuzz has lots to do with work climbing, it has tons of applicable info for Rec climbing.

Its good to get some pieces of rope, any rope or cord pretty much, and start practicing your knots. They are a basic building block of climbing systems and climbing safety.

10pm, dinner time, gotta go. Welcome to the Buzz. Its a great place to hang out.

alright thanks. id really like to do both recreational and tree removal. id really like to see someone in person and go over gear. then go from there. i think you can only read so much until you really get a real visual. then when you go back and do more research and reading it will make alot more sense. thanks and keep posting guys and gals i know your out there. more info the better.

Hi Nick,

Good to see you made it!

There are several arbos from The Cities who post here. Stick around and they'll be evident. Going back in the archives will help too. Lots of contacts and information.

If you have specific questions, ask away!

East central MN eh?...

Tom's right, there are a few half arsed climbers around here. Sometimes we'll organize a rec climb when we're not too burnt out from work. If you can figure out the pm function I'll share my # with ya.

im new too climbing, maybe 1 year experience. but ive learned a good amount here. definitly check out Wesspur. i go on there sometimes just to browse so i can become familiar with whats out there. it helps to know what people are talking about.

you can also look into taking a climbing course. i was sent to one by my employer and it made a big difference learning there and learning on the job like i was doing.

good luck!
