What's up everyone, this was just 2 types of canopy anchors combined, the flint locker (soft 8) and the ring & ring friction saver. I've used it for over a year now of my own make up. It was meant for tall and hazardous treea. I would use the SRS flint locker to ascend up with a lower TIP then when I got to the top I would inspect higher and use a cano-base anchor with a separate system. It works all off the same rope length, but is technically 2 ropes anchored seperate. Leaving an access line in the tree. Basically going back to how doubled rope use to be with an access line that retrieves all your gear. You can make your own set up of course with your desired length, this set up was my cleaned up version.PXL_20210526_204524081.jpg

Jake, maybe weird comment, but with requirement for two independant anchors/ climb systems in UK now, rescue/ 2ndary line blah blah, I'd ask if there's what we call a "Common Mode Failure" potential in this system - that is - could you fail one item in it and this would fail both climb systems in any of it's configurations? That's my only thought. I don't think so but not sure 100%?

No, they are 2 seperate anchors, I've had a couple UK people reach out about this as well. I guess you can say it's a redundant system, there is probably a better word for it, but they are actually both independent lines.

I need to back up a little and get up to speed on the flint locker or soft 8. I watched a video on how to use it as a retrievable crown anchor. I am not sure what advantage this has over a choked alpine butterfly with a long retrieval tail. (My go-to). Please educate me.

I see it as being able to retrieve both lines at once when down. If that then a thin line with connectors each end could also work to connect the two systems.

I cant really see the benefit of the sewn connection in that a Mallion could connect the two and allow independent use.

Also the length of the ring and ring seems a tad short for universal use - especially when the two anchors may be on opposite sides of the tree or otherwise separated.
Maybe it really suits the structure of trees in Pennsylvania?

Am I missing something?

I also use the butterfly (and quickie) with a long tail for most anchors, I believe the main benefit of the soft 8 is there's less friction when first breaking the anchor on the retrieval. Also with the soft 8 floating on the retrieval leg (as opposedto a fixed point like the Alpine Butterfly), I think it avoids the sharp rope angle on the working side when retrieving through a redirect.

I've been interested in giving the soft 8 a try, but just haven't put one together yet.

Abolutely agree on use of soft8 or flintlocker advantages - just curious about the advantages of connecting the two anchors systems together with a spliced connection - can someone advise me on the advantages of this setup over just connecting the soft8 to a friction saver with a hard connector?

Easier on retrieval, the rings on a soft 8 will float at the union untill the ropes are aligned, as opposed to an alpine where of if you take a redirect the alpine will drag the line with it.

No different, this is just cleaned up version that works for me. I did the same just with hitchcord
