Visiting a Flying Squirrel

Never seen a flying squirrel before, thanks for posting the vid. What about those other diminutive tree dwellers - chipmunks - got any of them in your hood?

You should hear the sounds they make.

Hi, Chipmunks are not tree-dwellers, they are ground squirrels, they live in tunnels. Sometimes their burrow entrance will be at the base of a tree. Very unusual to find a chippy in a tree.

Attached is a shot of 4 flyers at my feeder (I am in MN), I took it last winter.

I was once setting up an orchard ladder and rope to fix a customer's leaning bird house....I almost fell off the ladder when the little flyer jumped out of the hole.

They are cool creatures.

Are flying squirrels marsupials?

[/ QUOTE ]

No, like all squirrels they are rodents, they are the smallest North American tree squirrels and the only nocturnal tree squirrels.

I have raised them as pets, along with gray squirrels and chipmunks.

There is a similar-looking animal called a Sugar Glider that is native to Australia, those are marsupials.

I took attached photo last year, a flyer buzzing my garage.

Which are under serious threat from the non native American greys, like their human counterparts the greys are aggressive, greedy and irritating. They are stomping all over the indigenous reds homeland -

Now...to make matters even worse for the Reds, the ultra violent Russian Blacks have turned up attacking both the yankee greys and brit reds! The UK will soon be a black squirrel only domain.

Pet squirrels; did you find them on a tree job and you raised them? Was it hard? Tell us more about having pet squirrels pls.

Squirrels are not commonly kept as pets- they are a lot of fun as juveniles, then they get feisty and destructive. I have raised and released several orphaned gray squirrels (like the one on my shoulder in the avatar photo)

Gray Squirrels can live 20 years if they stay out of trouble. They rarely do. Average life span is about a year in the wild.

Flying Squirrels used to be popular children's pets in the 1700's in colonial New England, they are doable as pets if raised from a baby and you give them a lot of attention. Any wild-caught squirrel will pretty much never be a good pet.

I had a pair of flyers that lived 11 years that I used for educational demos in MN at local nature centers.
