Verticillium Wilt

You know, I think there are a couple of micro-injections labelled for VW, I have no idea how effective they are. It seems feasible, at least for a xylem inhabiting fungus, that it might do something, but it does usually start in the roots.

Treemann,
We've used Fungisol, a Mauget product. If the tree shows less than 25%, and it has adequate water, etc., we can generally SUPPRESS the fungus long enough for the tree to wall off the fungus (the theory anyway).
Used to only have high nitrogen fertilization and water to do the same, and THAT worked sometimes...
Make sure the jap maple doesn't have stem girdling roots. Same symptomology, but the horticultural regimen can exacerbate the condition!

Japanese Maples are small trees, easy to ovedose with Fungisol even when you follow label direction. Hate to see a fine tree die in a client front yard. Also you have a wounding issue on a stress tree.
