Vehicle Maintenance

When it becomes necessary to take a vehicle to a mechanic, what are the most important steps you can take to ensure that

1) you have the right shop for the job
2) repairs will be performed properly
3) the shop does not "invent" repairs
4) labor hours billed equals labor hours actually performed
5) unnecessary/unknown miscellaneous charges don't appear on your bill

I have had the best luck by hiring a good mobile mechanic to come out to my yard and do the work. I have had many issues with shops overbilling me and I am just over it.

With the mobile mechanic he charges me a very fair rate cuz I throw him a lot of work and he actually has a shop he can work in for big jobs.

He usually works on my trucks on the weekends cuz they are out working during the week. For the first few jobs I hung out and "supervised" him but after he gained my trust I gave him the keys to my shed and he just goes to work on his own and sends me a bill.... he hasn't screwed me yet... we'll see.
