Great thread! So... as far as I know it never took hold in the wider tree climber community? I'm thinking that the strong functionality, simplicity, and effectiveness has kept the throwing cube at the top of the throwing heap.

I liked Jim's reel a LOT. The reason I use cubes is because of the lower cubic volume in my gear bag. Two 200' cubes are about the same cubic space as one reel.

That's the unit, Tom. Made from an electric cord winder upper with a little hot rodding. When it came out I was gangbusters till the tales of putting a twist in your line.

Have tried this kite string reel setup - flake onto tarp and shoot but if you need back and forth thru branches to get the path you want up the stem it's not really much faster except for rewinding speedier.

I added bigger end plates to the cardboard spool the line was sold on, wedged/glued bit of wood in center, glued in a bit of 1/4-20 rod to chuck in the drill and hold the unit loosely in my palm so I can spool/flake before a shot and obviously drill wind it up after. Oh yeah, realized longer spool was better so split and widened it on the center wood chunk. no line twist
