Use A Log Arch?

I fabricated one for use with a 2-wheel tractor (similar to a gravely) worked very good with some oak logs wee moved. 28" by 8 foot Q. rubrum.

The limitations were due to the unit pulling not the arch. We had some bad pulling units we cobbed.

FF makes a nice unit. Get the biggest one you think that you'll use. If you get one that will go through a standard 36" gate you won't pick up logs that are too big around. If you get a bigger unit you can always tote the logs to the gate and stick the butt end through the gate. Then set the log down and rassle the arch through the gate and snag it again. If you make up a small dolly you can use it to keep the tail of the log off the ground. It also makes it easy to thread long logs around tight corners. A lot like driving a semi-trailer.

A buddy of mine gave me a homemade arch. In the picture you'll see the yellow arrow pointing to a male 2" reciever hitch. The red arrows are the places where the unit would come apart for transport. The arch would slip into the receiver with the tires up in the air. That unit would haul some mondo loads. The winch was used to lift the logs. Most of the time I'd use skidding tongs but sometimes just a sling to lift loads.

We just purchased one at tci. On friday I send my dad to go look at the both awhile later he can back with one. He bought it from somebody who won it and did not want to drag it home. We have not used it yet.

Hey Tom,

any chance of getting some closeups of the parts of your rig? BTW, the pic has a scrambled section near the atv...on purpose to hide something top-secret? Do tell! /forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The arch went to the scrap yard when I moved from MN. Nothing fancy that a good weldor can't make up. The unit had round stock going into the square tubing to knockdown. If I made one I would use the smaller reciever hitch materials. Northern sells them cheap.

Start with some hich flotation tires. The ones on my arch had a flat cross section which gives a wide footprint.

Your eyes are too good :)

i theorize that a true arch is stronger than a box arch. Like that if our doorways were Flintsonte/arched instead of modern/squared; they too would be stronger i think.

I too have a homemade arch. similarto marks no winch the long pole is used to leverage the log off the ground after securing it near the wheels. Ill try to get a picture

You guys have some creative stuff! Sure beats cutting the logs and taking more than necessary steps to get the wood out of a backyard. In addition, cutting logs creates a lot of time raking saw dust. /forum/images/graemlins/bigcry.gif
