US Coast Guard gets life-fire practice!

This might seem like fish in a barrel. Having something real to shoot at makes practice more real..and it must be wayyyy fun too!

In Captain Jack Aubrey and Lord Horatio Nelson's day they would shoot at empty wooden barrels to test their skills. If they had a prize that wasn't worth taking back to port the crews got to blow it up...with great zeal!

I read that the US Coast Guard said it was too dangerous to board the ship. It just seems like you could put a zodiac along side, pitch a grapple onboard, ascend the line with a team. They could check the forward deck fittings and stearage for integrity, route a line through the bullnose and tow. They could also prep a line or two aft for tug ops as they near harbor. Test the fuel onboard, get the dead guys off and salvage. 8 hours tops. <shaking my head>

I have a cousin in the Coast Guard based out of Kodiak, Alaska. I wonder if he was on board the Cutter that sank it?

They should have used the footage to make a movie with. With a little graphic tweaking they could have made a cool film.

That is just sick. Something about water makes humans view of things different when it's probably more sensitive. Water is a great solvent and dillution is the solution to pollution some say. Some say alot of stupid stuff though. Even catch and release fishing's acceptance. Would it seem sporting to bait deer with a hook in an apple then wrestle them in and unhook them 3/4 dead for a chuckle. Some don't even get a chuckle from it anymore but they still do it. WTF.

This just in!

A Canadian company has claimed salvage rights to the ship.

8,000 gallons of gasoline=$32,000 in the hold.

Well Tom, that was actually 8,000 LITRES of diesel, so more like 2,000 Gallons.

The Canadian vessel, The Bernice C, which attempted (and failed) to tow it burned more than twice that just making the attempt.

I don't know a fig about maritime salvage, you might be right.

But the ship had already been prepped for dismantling back in Japan before the tsunami swept it out to sea, so very unlikely there were bodies onboard. Also possible our Coast Guards also had info about the ship's condition we are not aware of.

Given that this ship is just the first sizable floater item among megatons of tsunami debris headed our way, we've got to figure something out that is better than this, no doubt.

It's interesting to ponder that in the debris-field headed our way may be lumber that was first logged on the BC coast and shipped to Japan who knows how many years ago...
