Re: \'Urgent Rescue\' Question?

I'm entertained reading all the posts on this thread. I to am a career firefighter/medic. I have 15 years in a metro fire department that serves a population of over 250k. I have spent the better portion of my 15 years on the tech rescue team and am a Lieutenant on a heavy rescue truck. There's my bio...here's my thoughts.

The fire department is very good at technical rescue. When I say that, I mean in our routine enviornment. We do more than an average amount of high angle/tech rescue. Where we do it is on ships, highrise builkdings, and industry. I can think of 2 tree rescues' in 15 years and they both were in reach of a big ole ladder truck.

Our confort zone is steel and concrete, not trees and wood. All our goodies are designed for these situations. Not a climber stuck in a tree. We aren't trained or equiped for that type of call. Generally we dont understand how arbos climb, how their gear is set up, or how anybody could ever hang off a branch. In our world, 1 steel I beam isn't enough, we need 2. One 1/2" line isn't enough, we need 2. Get my point?

What we aren't good at is putting the "The fire fighters are here, we know everything, now step back on the other side of the yellow tape tree guy." Also as it was explained , we have an increadible liability and some crazy rules we have to go by that may seem overkill to all of you. There's a difference between a true professional and some ego driven dude in a big truck with lots of cool gear..........The professional will take input and listen to the subject matter expert(tree guy) and take what he has to say into consideration. Ultimately the responsability will fall on the FD, therefore, you will not be included in the rescue plan, other than to be an advisor. We just can't do it. Its our butt on the line.

Here's the proposal......find out who's gonna come get you out of the tree. Train with them and teach them about what you do. Tech rescue guys always want to learn some new rope stuff. If you set up the site, i'm certain they will come train with you. You will both learn something and develop relationships.

If they're 3 hours out, then you've gotta do, what you've gotta do. I live on the fence here. If I see a climber on my job site in need of help, I'm gonna call 911 and then go get him/her. Chances are, when the FD gets there its a toss up whats gonna happen or how long its gonna take to get that climber down. Of course lots of other factors come into play here but I hope you get the point.

I have trained several neighboring departments on tree rescue. Some have even called me before they bought the gear so they get the rite stuff. What I wan't is another climber on my crew to get the ball rolling but I don't have one. Even if they get up there and tie off the huge limb that has me pinned to the trunk, thats one less thing the FD has to worry about when they get there.

The key to all this is to get the guys that don't understand what you do trained. But remember, they won't be doing things your way and its gonna seem like overkill but thats the way it is.
