Under the beech tree - nj pun

I think it's a European Green Weeping Beech a.k.a. Fagus sylvatica 'Pendula'. A very popular planting in cemeteries for obvious reasons :-) It could also be a very old Fagus sylvatica 'Tortuosa' but it looks maybe too large for that variety.

European beech tends to form limb and branch fusions especially in Pendula or Tortuosa because of the odd branch twists and turns.

Fans of beech out there have probably seen big old european beech do "ground fusion" where lower limbs touch the ground, root and develop into a separate tree after the original connecting branch from the tree dies and falls off, as in this photo:

there is a love for the beech

i am going back to nj after the leaves are gone just to document the trees. they are wonderful. the bark looks like elephant hide at times the way it folds. romantic about that, not very scientific.

i will be posting more pictures on smug face site should others want to view other underside photos of the branches (gallery name trees)

moss - again thanks for sharing the knowledge - that is what makes this place so special.

to all that share what they know

a BIG THANKS
