Ultra tech 8mm e2e

Ditch the ultra tech! The polyester cover is worthless.

Get beeline.

Regardless of which you use, master and implement the locking brummell when splicing those ropes with exposed eyes.

Lets clean up the language. "standard locking brummel" isn't really a thing. There's a LOCKING brummel, then there's non-locking splices, such as a straight bury (no passes) or what some would call a through and through splice where the tapered tail goes through the standing end twice before getting buried.

So here it is. Thanks guys for all your tips, I wasn't clear on the LB, but I've got it now.
Thanks Jay for your very clear instructions.
Nick I think I figured out what you mean about the polyester cover being junk-it basically fell apart while putting the cover back in and milking it, and so I ended up having a slightly mismatched cover. There is no slack in the cover though, so once I get some dip on the eyes I think I will climb on it.

Either way it was a fun first effort and good learning process, and I will improve from here. Thanks again.

Jon

That doesn't look all bad!

I do want to clarify what I meant about the polyester- it's not quite how you took it to mean.

I'm assuming you were making this as a hitch cord. Ultratech is a SWEET rope, but as a hitch cord, it has one mega fail.

The core of Ultratech, is Technora (hence the name). Technora is crazy strong and way heat resistant. It burns (chars, not melts) at 800-900 F depending on a few variables. That's AWESOME.

However- the polyester that it is covered with is the interface to your climbing line (or rigging line). Polyester is a GREAT material to make rope of, but as a hitch cord, it just doesn't have a high enough of a melting point.

So basically, you bought a BMW, but will only get the performance of a Corolla.

That being said, there are some die-hard Ultratech hitch cord lovers out there. But those folks have to descend with care. Too fast and you can easily melt that thin polyester cover.

When you switch to beeline or HRC or Ocean Polyester, you'll find that you can peel out of the tree as fast as you want and the hitch cord will barely be scathed.

Good splice work. The next one better have a longer cover or we're sending someone over to knock some sense into ya!

love
nick
