I am always in pole gaffs, tried the european style and personally did not enjoy them, could be because I have been on the poles for so long now.
I do have a set of long gaffs that I bought like 6 years ago but they are still new in the box I have never used them.

it worked out quite well
in summer that move is closely followed by a collective groan as the last of the shade disappears into the chipper.

Do you know anything about Port Lincoln? It looks like a really nice place to work and raise a kid or two. Not sure how difficult it would be for a 36yr old to get a work visa for fishing but I sent out some emails to a few tuna/prawn outfits

not a problem, port lincoln is a fishing town which also does a dock /harbor? service for grain loading ships,
yes also prawn fishing and tuna farming is a commercial business run out of port lincoln which also employs divers to manage the floating pens. and commercial diving for crayfish I worked with a german fellow who did both tree work and commercial diving.
is a large by our standards township/ regional city and quite a beautiful place.
once a year they have a tuna themed festival 'tunarama' including the world famous tuna toss
as to the working visa you are on your own there I am afraid I haven't the foggiest.
one thing more, there is some serious money in lincoln, Tuna Barons who have mansions and compete with each other
which affects the value of property in certain parts of port lincoln so be careful and check housing availability closely. if you need a local contact to harass and bother real estate agents etc I will help out when time allows .

Sounds idealistic to me. I'm likewise a man child, and seeking a new horizon. Love the thought of being a few steps closer to Antarctica too.
Fishing and tree work puts me places closer to heaven.
Now just to keep cultivating the idea to my lady who is very certain one of us will be dragged off by spiders and snakes and the child taken by dingos.
