i work for a contractor under detroit edison, ibew local 17, i seen this story on the news and they showed the maple that was side trimmed, and it was probly 20 feet taller then the lines so it wasnt the first time it was trimmed, the guys that trimmed it before probly did a "lite" trim on it last time to keep her happy, but we all know that trees grow and for the most part we trim in most areas here in southeastern mich ever 5 to 8 years and it was probly growing right into the wires.
the trimmer trimmed to specs, some people just don't relize what kind of tree they are planting under the lines, and then we get yelled at for having to trim there trees that could be a safety hazard. the foreman will go knock on all the doors before we get down the street and let home owners we are going to be in there yards and most people say ok and a few want to know what we are going to do and are understanding of what we have to trim.
and the city of troy is always in the news, a couple months ago they were crying because ITC (tower lines) had trimmers go in a remove maples from under the high lines. so its nothing new here.
