trouble with double braid eye

First attempt at double braid splicing. Actually first 5 attempts - all failures. I keep having a hell of a time getting the core back into the cover and up through the Y.
I've tried with wire and with fid and pusher. Both seem to really jam up and then I lose the core inside, usually before the Y.
So, is this normal? I'm using Lava and Poison HiVy. Are these especially hard ropes or is it really that much harder if they are used already? These are just practices before I try a bull rope.
Is 5/8 stable braid going to be harder or easier?
I keep thinking that the milking will be the tricky part but I haven't even made it there yet!
Any other pointers?
Thanks in advance,

You should have started with the bull rope because they are much easier to bury.

After you bury the cover inside the core; hold it at the bury point and equalize the core over the tapered cover. You can lock-stitch the crossover to keep it from bunching up before you attempt the final bury. When you are attempting the final bury grasp the splice at the crossover and keep tension on it while you slowly milk the cover over.

When I splice the core into the cover I use scotch tape to make a funnel shape over my core in the wire fid. That helps it slide through and keeps the tip of the core from popping out of the fid.

Those are just some tips that helped me.

I've done the same thing with used PI. It just doesn"t want to go. The piece I have been trying is my favorite clim bing line and I have been unsuccessful 3 times now. I did do one with new Blue Moon, which is the same line but a different color and the whole thing slid right in. Kinda surprised myself on that one. Still have to try more on new ropes to see what happens.

I would stop and practice on some new rigging line or sta-set or something easy so you can learn the motions and concepts down.

then, moving to climbing lines will be WAY easier. Right now you're fighting the concepts AND you're fighting the rope.

Divide and conquer.

with trick with a wire fid, is dont use anything like tape etc.

just make sure the rope is still silky smooth, and has not bunched up or become coarse.

pull approx 2.5" through the wire fid end, and remove single threads upto 5" back from the fid, making sure to maintain the weave, then separate the exposed end and start the pull, try and work out the most you can pull out.

you can pull more core out of the rope, at the same time pulling on the wire fid, to ease it out.

also try a plastic mallet, and just give it good whack all around to loosen the fibres.

OK so now I have another problem...

I moved on to the 5/8 stable braid and it was a dream! especially after fighting with the PI so much. Both core and cover slid together like butter and the milking went great.
The problem is that the male leg of the eye is still loose enough that it can be pulled back out of the splice quite easily. It splice seems to grab fairly tight when loaded in the eye but the one leg seems to slip back out way too easily if I pull on it. Also it seems to just keep milking to the point that my eye is getting smaller.
Any thoughts?

What is preffered, lock stitching or whipping? Or whip locking? Does it depend on the type of splice and/or rope material? I think I read somewhere here that dental floss was okay to use!?

I remember whan I was drinking and talking this splice with Stanley Longstaff back in the early 90 's . I learned from a book , didnt know I was talking with the man . I could splice the dbl eye but After talking and bragging ( should have shut up ) Stanley , he helped me out . So Robinia , here is what I was told years ago by the master , . RElax and Relax the rope . He was magic on the taper , he was so cool how he closed a splice . It's all in the taper , measurements and relaxing . Close the deal . My first couple splices I didnt taper it correctly ,I was unsure . Stanley brought it home for me . Relax . I'll raise a beer to Stanley later this week , he would love this question ! ten beers deep too !
