Figured it was for harvesting bark for homeopathic medicine from slippery elm. Apparently this is a problem for this tree in the wild, end up getting girdled

Yeah, I looked into the slippery elm situation when you posted that. We do not have them around here. I had no idea that that was happening. I learn a lot from this thread that I never would learn elsewise. And, one of my weaker areas is species ID, so I learn that too!

It is another Siberian...I wasn't going to do that one, but since you just used that species, I had to ask! The point is the 2 smaller.

That is it. Was hoping it would be harder...it was for me!

I thought it was Hawthorn when I first saw it (a few weeks ago, before leaves came out) - didn't pay that much attention, was not what we were looking at. I was taking out a honeysuckle bush for the client (he asked if he should trim it or remove it...I warned him I've been a forester for too long to see more than one way to answer that!) and was dragging it past those to load it up when I noticed the opposite branching...the buds were broken and just a little bit of flowers were out. Had to scratch my head a bit and look it up to confirm. I don't see many C. mas around and it is just different enough.
