Sorry for the confusion, guys. After some thought I realized that a tree can be both native and invasive (see eastern red cedar).

Anyway, this is Phellodendron amurense, and the small tree in front is a 'seedling.' We just held the NETCC down in Goddard Park, RI, and the planted Phellodendron there have escaped into the woods by the thousands.

The photo was from February. Believe it or not its really green and warm up here! And we have lots of Magnolias, just not nearly the size of the tree in the photo.
