Trees from a distance

This one might take some homework.

Flaky red bark that looks just like Acer griseum or Betula nigra. I don't think this is a very common species but the genus is.
Opposite branching.
 
I've search for a while, two evenings now. Can't come up with it.

with the opposite clue, i figured some kind of dogwood, but can't find anything to match.
 
sorry, not a dogwood.

Here is another photo - twigs and leftover seeds.

Another species in this genus is so common it's "vulgar".

Here is one from the Black Hills Veterans National Cemetery out in South Dakota.

All of the trees in the row opposite of the flags are the same species. What are they?
