C. mas it is. I have seen specimens with ~10" trunks, 20 feet tall with distinct branching patterns. So C. mas is a tree IMO. At least compared to a Forsythisa or a Corylopsis. With C. mas, it comes down to the propagation... They can be grown as trees, but are often grown as a multi stemmed shrub.
