Did you know this? Betulinic acid, a compound found in birch bark, was discovered by US researchers 1995 to kill melanoma (cancerous) cells in the skin whilst leaving healthy cells unharmed.
 
what's wrong with you guys?

you haven't named a common birch in the mountains or North east states that has smooth bark like that.

B. lenta it is! Nice work! And yes, it looks like this tree was topped 10-15 years ago. It's in a neighborhood where topping is still requested and sometimes done.
