Doesn't look much like Fraxinus.

Acer pseudoplatanus?

[/ QUOTE ]

Box Elder bark can sometimes look like that of an ash IMHO.

Anyone with a pic feel free to post. Need to buy a camera.

hahaha. Jeez, Acer negundo!
Whether that was intentional or not, even a passing reference to the term 'champion' made me think this was going to be something special.

Now that we know what it is the pruning seems perfectly acceptible - that thing's going to be just fine!

I was looking at the twigs. Not very Ash- like. The bark looked like it could be anything. I can see the similarity though...

It's a giant for that species, which is why I wanted to preserve it. I would have preferred a less drastic pruning combined with a cable or two, but the client couldn't afford the added expense and frankly, this may wind up triggering some new growth in the crown, and not just at the ends. We'll see. The client just wants the shade and doesn't really care about the species/size so much.

Anyone got a pic?

Ok i've got one! this is going to be a tough one i think. These pictures are from a co worker of mine, i'll tell yall more about this tree after you guys answer it.

Looks like a broadleaf evergreen. Leaf looks almost like some kind of Bay. Is it a Gordonia of some sort?

(PS - I saw the 'Ascending the Giants' presentation at a conference a couple years ago. Awesome photography and presentation.)

no and no. broadleaf evergreen yes. Brian and Will do great things with champion trees, i'm still trying to talk them into letting me in on a climb

the company signature on the photo was the first clue as to where to find the name.

But was still hard to track it down.
