Heard this on Paul Harvey today:

A woman was having some remodeling done to her house including tree work. She was outside taking pics while the "tree trimming crew" was working. Paul said the tree fell the wrong way crushing the woman. I think he said it was in Chicago.
Anyone know the rest of the story? (no pun)

Man does that suck! Homeowners should always be kept away no matter what! A simple way to go about it is to tell the homeowner that their yard has become a hard hat zone and that tends to keep them away without making you seem like a jerk. It does work, we do it all the time!

Thats terrible news Raven.
It's probably your worst nightmare come true.
Someone pays you to do a professional job and that happens.
Even thinking about it makes me sick.
Poor woman...
Can you get more info on what happened?

Just this week I was working for an elderly fellow, and explained to him where the potential drop zone was. I emphasized the importance of our need for him to stay out of our work area. He goes inside and comes back out with a hardhat on. That was really cool, unfortunately, we still had to shut down and escort him out of our work area. He really was a nice guy and I did appreciate his PPE.

I once had a take down where an old man insisted on walking under my tag line while I was cutting my back cut. The old man would have been clear of major limbs, but the tips of the tree would have got him.

I couldn't hear my goundie yelling at him or me when I was making the back cut. My groundie had a responsibility to keep tension on a 3:1 mechanical advantage. I placed one wedge in the back cut and saw someone walking in the corner of my eye. My groundie and I were yelling at the old guy. With a brazen face the old man continued to walk through the drop zone. We were in a pickle! Neither me nor my goundie could stop him because that would mean all three of us would have been in the drop zone! True story.

Ever heard of the saying, "Don't be a second victim."

i once had some strong wind pick up and take a top wrong way. thank goodness that no one was in the drop zone. We work in a serious business and it sucks if not all your crew is on the same page.
