Tree Worker Hurt in fall

SHAWMUT, ME -- A Cornville man cutting down a large tree on Currier Road was seriously injured after the boom on his bucket truck broke and he fell 25 feet to the ground. Ralph Pierce, owner of One, Two, Tree Service, was flown Monday afternoon to Eastern Maine Medical Center from a nearby field. A report on his condition was not available. According to co-workers at the scene, Pierce was in the extended bucket while cutting down a pine tree at a residence on Currier Road. Employee David Bruso said Pierce had removed limbs from the tree and that<font color="red"> a large branch had fallen to the ground and become embedded in the lawn. "He attached a cable winch from the bucket to the limb and was pulling the wood from the ground when the boom broke,"</font> Bruso said. Bruso said that Pierce flipped out of the bucket after it dropped 25 feet onto the lawn. "It was unreal," Bruso said. "It was quite a ride." He added that Pierce initially was unconscious but later tried to speak before the ambulance arrived. "He was not bleeding, but looked as though he had broken bones." Fairfield firefighter Lt. Mike Murphy described Pierce's injuries as serious. "He suffered multiple-system trauma," Murphy said.<font color="red"> Bruso said the 12-by-12-inch steel boom on the bucket truck had been welded in the past.</font> While picking up sawed-off tree limbs, employee James Whittemore said what happened to Pierce was "pretty dramatic. He is my cousin and a good friend." He said a crane will need to remove the bucket truck due to its unstable condition. http://www.onlinesentinel.com/news/tree-worker-hurt-in-fall_2010-05-17.html
