hi,

i have been offered work with a firm in norway for the summer season, i realy like the sound of it but have heard some bad things about the firm from students who have been there before.
can anyone in norway tell me more about ab trepleie?

many thanks

Ha! yeah ..well i went there for 2 weeks!..if you like working 12 hr days...cutting down trees in the pitch dark..and being pushed to take down 70ft conifers in 30 minutes then go for it.

oh did i mention they know [censored] about tree safety.!!

yeah they expect you to take out your own insurance...guess why!!!!

yeah man ..i would reccomend going anywhere else ..but not norway.

try austria, italy, germany.

wow that sounds pretty stink,
i heard some horror stories about the owners but that insurance thing is a disgrace... this bloke is saying hes the best in norway, but i suppose anyone can say that. thanks for the tip.

Hi chubster,

what sort of hours are you having to work and under what conditions?

regards

Don\'t believe everything you hear

I work for AB out in Bergen
I was never asked to provide my own insurance.
70ft tree in 30 minutes? Why not if you can?
Here I was under no illusions as to what I was up against,Vegard needed a professional climber who would do as much work as possible every day.Thats what I do,six days a week for the last 10 weeks.Sounds like some of the guys who have come over in the past, talked themselves up,got here, freaked out and may have used excuse's when back home it cover their lack of aptitude. As for knowing buggar all about tree safety, well its up to you, your the contractor and thus the professional. There is great money to be made here, you just have to work for it.

Re: Don\'t believe everything you hear

hi all,
thanks for the feedback.
i think someone mentioned a firm called acrobat and some are getting confused. the firm that offered the placement was AB trepleie in oslo, not bergan.

did you get over there from england mike?

Re: Don\'t believe everything you hear

Hello Chubbster

Nah,I actually came all the way from New Zealand to work here.I worked with a guy in the states who left to come over here.He worked a summer and left to work in Sweden.Akrobat does have an opperation there in Oslo, never been there. If your any good you get about £20 per hour, you do get hit with tax @36% but as you are a subbie you can call a lot back on gear, fuel, clothing etc.So you tell me where you can gross £220 per day,six days a week?I don't thats why I'm here. There have been a few know all, recently graduated from Arb college, "kit freak"pratts that got schooled about contract climbing. That might be the source of some of the rumors. It is true that your instuctions can be more than a bit vauge here, thats due to the quotes being given by people who are also subbies.Yeah, crappy at times but if you know your stuff and your judgment has been proven on previous jobs, then no worries.Again, the job was advertised for a professional, not a learner.I don't know what else to add,I am just telling it how it is.Any more questions, ask here or give me a call.

yeah i meant akrobat!!..not all norwiegen companys are bad...but akrobat was like a arborists nightmare!!...yeah also has anyone worked for tradmastarna here???...another crazy [censored] cowboy company ....where knocking down 4 70ft scotspines on half a day..over lines ..is not fast enough.

Dam some of these guys need to forget about trying to be all macho..and think about there crews safety first.

that guy in norway..would start at 10am..then be rushing all day..telling me if we knock of 5 minutes on this job..and 5 minutes on the next..we will save about 1 hr every week!!!!! haha....frickin loco!!

Fair enough
All Norwegain companies are bad?Worked for them all have you mate? You should come over here with Mark Chisholm next week and display your talent...
Of course all us "Macho cowboys" wouldn't attend an expert showing us new technique's, as we'd all be too busy being "bad" climbers.

Unlike yourself

Hi
I personally know Glen Read, the owner of AB trepleie, he demands a lot of his crew but are a good man. Mike is working as a subcontractor in acrobat for about 20£ an hour, not exactly great in Norwegian terms since you have to carry your own expences and insurance. Our company in general do line clearance and do most of our felling on ground. Anybody want to work in Norway can send me an email and I will try to give you some good advice allthough you must bear in mind that Norway is a virgin market as far as treecare is concerned.
Cheers
Svein

Sounds like this company is not really a responsible tree company at all, just a person who passes on work to exploited workers.

If you are climbing for a company and are having to provide public liability insurance then you are being exploited.

Sounds like this employer is making a fool of his workforce.

What are the terms of the contract? who supplies the equipment? who is responsible for first aid on site? do you have to provide proof of training to climb for this company?

If a rigging rope snaps when you are lowering a branch over a house and causes damage, who pays for the damage? the company or the climber? it should be the company.

hi, treebear.
thats the first positive thing anyone has said about this company, it seems a lot of climbers have been there with the promise of good pay, good work conditions etc. however judging by the many private mails i recieved about this firm it has been the experience of all, that this man targets forign students (who dont understand the work laws in norway), tricks people to get them there and overworks them to the point of crushing morale. and rewards them with low pay and an agresive attitude!! i realise you know the man personaly and thank you for taking the time, however i wanted feedback from guys with experience working for this man, im sure he is a great guy to have a beer with down the pub, but in all honesty from what i heard i wont go near his job offer.
like i said i already heard some strange tales, i thought i could get a better idea starting a thread here, and i got a good idea not to go.

thanks again all

Treebogan,

I believe you paid me a compliment. Thank you for that (unless I misinterpreted it). I hope that I get the chance to meet you next week. I am very excited! Svein and I will have a lot of fun for sure! Cheers.
