Tree Work: America's Deadliest Job

Worker safety is the stupidest reason to buy a lift.
I'm willing to bet my most questionable decisions came when I was in a lift now that I sit and think about it

I agree and rigging is more complicated because you don't want to hit the boom, they usually mess up a lawn pretty good or you can't get them into the back yard. Climbing wins every time...

Well I'm gunna honest here....
I love using a lift when it's on site and will reach where I need to get to. I'll rig shit up all kinda cool ways cause I can fly from point to point. They can actually make for really fun work.

They are the biggest problem for me when I'm dealing with something sketchy, I'm at the end of the lift reach and the cut I have to make is still too big/ possibly too big. In the past I've almost always said we got this, hey rope guy let it run the best you can, and made the cut.
That's how bad stuff inevitably happens. Works once, you get some false confidence, hey these ropes and slings are invincible, then bang you blow the rigging point on the tree.

Soooo mothers can let their daughters be tree climbers then?
Just making a point. Way to rule out women right off the hop, stupid ad.

I understand male-dominated fields of work but that's a little ridiculous.

That kind of s**t reeeally gets to me, sorry!

Also, like mentioned above, if you're in an ad for tree work you should at least look the part. These guys look like they just finished their shift at the gas station

/end rant/
Mel, the company is in Atlanta GA. The gas station is where most of the "tree companies" get their employees around here. I was talking to a company owner the other day and he was saying how most of the employees in this area are paid by the day and how hard it is to get them off that routine. I'm not sure how they handle income taxes but I'm sure it is a nightmare.

I had a tree the other day that a standard bucket would have made into a cake walk. The troublesome goal was weight reduction over some not power lines way over the road in a leggy pecan. The stretching lead was not something that I favored for a primary tie in, but it was as tall as the center leader and that had some old storm damage that made it hard to set a high tie in. All I'm saying is that it is occasionally preferable to have a lift. 9 days out of 10 I'll smoke one on routine work.
