UPDATE: Electrocuted tree trimmer identified

- A tree trimmer electrocuted Thursday afternoon in Poquoson has been identified as 49-year-old Edward Dix.

Dix is orginially from the Eastern Shore of Virginia, but his last known address was in Chesapeake, Poquoson Police Detective Dwain Marlowe said. His family lives out-of-state and was notified of his death Friday morning.

Witnesses told police that Dix was taking down a tree at 193 Cedar Road Thursday afternoon when one of the branches became entangled in a power line. When he tried to free the branch, Dix apparently came into contact with the power line and was electrocuted.

Emergency crews were called to Cedar Road at 12:43 p.m., and Dix was pronounced dead at 1:35 p.m.

Marlowe said Dix was an experienced tree trimmer working as a day laborer for a company called A Cut Above the Rest.

Marlowe said Poquoson police have finished their investigation into the incident, and ruled it an accidental death. An autopsy confirmed that the cause of death was electrocution, he said.

The incident is also being investigated by Dominion Power and by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
