Tree Top Games

Location
NJ
Just was wondering if anyone gets together and plays around up there? I have been trying to get some tag going on but I am never able to get enough people together. And if so, we usually cannot just because of the different level of skill. Don't won't the new guy being it all the time.

I figure there are lots do do from capture the flag, tag, frizbee, HORSE, and others. So besides work and just hangout or sleep what else do you do up in the tops?

I think this is the crux of recreational tree climbing. Unlike rock climbing where the challenge is climbing up. The challenge in trees is to be able to move around. It is difficult to give yourself a reason to just go to the tips of branches unless your actually going to do something out there. In rock climbing the reason is to get to the top, there is a destination. So far the reasons to climb trees are for work, competition (ring a bell at the tips), or meditative relaxation. The latter involves simply climbing up the tree and enjoying the sway and the breeze. There is no real challenge other than assending which most of the time is pretty straightforward.\

It would great to think of a good game to bring out the real challenges of moving around in a tree without involving work or competition, just for fun.

A friend of mine and I played tag in the tree. They were just beginning to climb so I had a handicap. I could only use my left hand to climb. That evened things out quite nice.

When I was in CO a few of us played tag in some large cottonwoods. This was fun and we all paid close attention to being safe. Anyone who didn't climb on a split tail was a sitting duck when it came time to recrotch and escape.

Cornering is fun to watch when you're safely on the other side of the tree! Chasing a climber out on a limb gives them the opportunity to swing or redirect and lower down. Lots of creative solutions.

Sounds like fun Tom. Games seemed like a good way to bring some more excitement up top. As well it would help develope and sharpen different skills.

Gee - what about paint ball that might be fun?

OK no weapons in the trees.

At a tree climb a few weeks ago there was a letter box in the tree.

http://www.atlasquest.com/aboutlb/

The person found the box by decoding clues on the internet then climbing to the box, putting her stamp in a notebook in that box and using the stamp from the box on her note pad.

I have never (well maybe never) played a game in a tree. But I think a scavenger hunt type, treasure hunt would be cool, it would make you get in and about the tree, hand each player a map the one with the most items listed on their pad wins.

Or poker - Put cards in a can in certain parts of the tree and again you have to get at the least 5 for a hand - sort of like a motorcycle poker run.

have fun in the trees.

How long does the "it" person have to make an escape after being tagged?

Seems like everyone would be closing in on the same area when the tag is made, making it hard for the new person to get away?

Sounds like fun!

It does sound like fun.

A fun rule would be that you can't tag the person that tags you back.

One ground rule of tree tag is to have an agreed upon signal for stopping play. At times the play has edged up to the point where someone could make a stupid mistake. Anyone in the game can stop the action. Touching anyone elses rope or gear is not allowed either.

I'm in nj 3 days a week, pm me if you want to play some times. I'm always game! Jersey, paintball while suspeded is actually VERY difficult and hrts like he l l if you get cornered in a tight crotch or sumpin. Fun nonetheless!!

Will do zaphod. I will most likely being putting on another rec. climb this year somewhere in central jersey. Not sure if I will use the same location or what but will keep the game in mind when picking out the site.

I'll be up in Jersey june 29-june 30. (central Rutgers area)

I don't have all my gear yet so no climbing for me. paintball would hurt and no barrier to hide behind.

anyone up for sushi (or is that just for after the comps when Rich is there). Maybe a how do wave as I pay my toll at the bridge.

enjoy the trees you climb,

jz
