Tree spikes

The spikes I currently have tear up my shins, they were hand-me downs from my current employer. Is there a brand of spikes that are comfortable or is one brand better then another?

First off, Welcome. Now how about some more info.
How many hours a day are you in them?
What are you currently wearing?
Have you considered Cadillac Pads?
How much money are spikes worth to you?

I've only been in the tree care industry for about a year now and have been spending more time in the trees now. I don't know what brand my current ones are, all I know is they are red hard plastic on the outside (might not be much help there). I don't need to spend a ton of money, just wondering if there was an affordable pair out there that are somewhat comfortable.

I don't spend a lot of time in mine either but for the cost my setup is a pair of steel Kleins with Cadillac pads. While the rest of me hurts after a day in them my shins and feet never do. And it is a very affordable combo.

A picture would help...are they pole or tree or euros....and do you climb thick bark conifers or thin barked hardwoods....

I'm gonna agree with jswan and Oroboros affordable would be replacing pads. That being said, the only spurs I know of that are red are geckos. Spurs don't get much more comfortable than geckos though......are they adjusted correctly for your height?

If your going to replace I would get a set of Geckos as others stated I replaced my set of Klein's with them and would never go back to any other set.

I actually don't like the geckos they are too rigid for me and cause twisting at the knees too much. Also the stirrups are so thick they can make it a pain when limb walking. I like the thickness of the kiwi klimbers carbons better but they are still too rigid for me.

Kleins and caddy pads are my pick. Yes they are heavier and clunky but they allow some extra movement for me and are as comfortable as can be. The geckos are a little more calf friendly with those wide velcro straps but I just run the caddys a little loose and they work fine, they also will out last me. Also for hard woods with thin bark I always have trouble getting a good spike set with light weight spikes, the steel ones add just enough weight I don't need to stomp them in.

Try other climbers spikes and find a set you love before you buy them. Even if you have to trade some work etc for the opportunity.

First steel spikes I used rubbed on my ankle bones. Went to Bashlins. One set with pole gaffs, 90% of the time, and another set with tree gaffs, about 10% of the time. Bashlins with Alco (Caddy Pads) zero pain even if on the side of a spar for 8 hours.

Gaffs can be very personal....just like our different body trypes...Merle's suggestion is the truth...I been on 5 different types...my buckingham titniums with pole are the best....for ME

And I own a pair of KK climbers.....recently bought back my original buck tis...waiting for them in the post....cannot wait to fly them again
