I have been off this thread awhile but this one takes the cake: Well maybe I was wrong… TY jomoco. My 3/4 bull line snapped yesterday. Thats what brought on this question. It was a bit sunbeaten. It wasnt a sampson rope and I do realize that ropes vary so much. I was totaly in awe at how this limb snapped it. Plus as I stated maybe not clearly anouther limb got away from me due to improper tying. Thanks to no one as of yet I belive the term I was looking for is "butt hitching". I finnally stumbled back to it. As for the 40 foot limb hitting my bucket do the math 80' tree cut at 40'. What hits my truck? Tiny brush. I just need to make damn sure thats all. Thanks for the help, I guess. What I really need to know at this point and, havn't gotten any help with... What rope rating should I feel comfortable with? 3100 lbs. Ok I got it thats scary. I myself was dissapointed when the best local distributor said that was the best they had. What rating would you guys feel was safe? Simple question.

He might be trolling……. or Walmart shopping…. maybe Ace?

Posted on AS. The iPad doesn't seem to copy/ paste the link properly, but here is what the media reported happened to an unfortunate soul using the J.Greene Method:

ANDERSON COUNTY, S.C. -
A 36-year-old man was killed Tuesday morning when he fell more than 60 feet from a basket crane while topping a pine tree, according to the coroner.

Anderson County Coroner Greg Shore was at the scene on Laurel Lane. He identified the man as Gerald Lee Culler Jr.

Shore said Culler was the owner of Anderson Arbor Pros. According to Shore, an employee working on the tree needed help, so Culler took over.

Culler asked Ralph Callahan, of Callahan Crane Service, to operate the basket lift, Shore said.

Shore said that Callahan asked Culler if he was going to take safety equipment up with him, but Culler said he was a professional and didn't need it and left the gear on the ground.

Shore said the pine tree was about 110 feet tall. He said Culler was topping the tree at about 65 feet, and the tied-off portion of the tree swung around and hit the basket, turning it upside down and throwing Culler out and to the asphalt driveway below.

A fall from that height is about the same as a fall from a six-story building.

The Pendleton Rescue Squad and Sandy Springs fire department were also on the scene.

OSHA is investigating the accident.

weeks later... Why did I even check on this thread? Glutton for punishment I guess. I admited my mistakes, I listened to reason yet, fools like jeff still have to have something to add as if they never even read my responses. No ratherbclimbing I'm not lurking. Tried to avoid coming here. Dumb move on my part to return... Then felt compelled to reply... pretty lame on my part.

Just came across this thread. All I can say is wow! I will give a lot of you credit for trying to get Mr. Greene not to cut a 40’ top off. It’s nice to see so many of you have your heart and head in the right place… and lots of patience.

Johan,
March is right around the corner, so this thread is approaching it’s first anniversary. If you are still out there, have you had the chance to read “Tree Climbers Companion”, “To Fell a Tree”, “Fundamentals of General Tree Work”, and perhaps Beranek’s training videos ?

Please give us an update on what you have been doing and if your rigging skills have gotten better.

I don’t want to encourage your method of dropping a tree, but would love to see a video of this. If for nothing else, you have a lot of grit.

Btw, that Bob Vila video is still on the net.
Absolutely precious thread.

Quick question we know holding a 40' out of an 80' tree is crazy weight and force.

My question is if its a 50'-60' top the tops would hit the ground absorbing some of the weight and force then you're catching the butt not the whole thing. Would it be half or more or less or how would you come close to figuring that out?

I use this on big low sections on manitoba maples, willows, etc. to avoid the butt crushing retaining walls side walks etc.

My fear would be the crown bending, absorbing some of that initial energy, but remember energy is conserved, so now you have a top of the tree under new tension and compression loads. i would worry that the top would come down, absorb energy, but then "pogo-stick" out in another direction, and with different leverage forces, most likley out of line of the spar of the tree, there can be severe side loading on the trunk.

Im sure you have all bombed a long whippy branch, it landed vertically, tips first, then it can shoot off in almost any direction, just think of the energy in one small branch doing that, compare that to a top weighing thousands of pounds going through a much larger drop cycle.

I have run a bucket truck for over 30 yrs..if your ok with anything hitting your truck your doing it wrong. So much could go bad with that . Your attitude will get you or someone below you killed.

KevinS i wanted to respond but couldnt find the words i wanted so figured it was best to wait, SRTSteve took the words right out of my mouth. that energy has to go somewhere else and its more unpredictable. Pogo stick kinda action is tough to predict what will happen

from what you were saying tho(i think i do the same as your saying), for lower stuff that wont be landing on the tips, butt straight up, its much different than a top and more controllable.
