Tree climbing in Florida - what a high in the sky

It was a great day to go tree climbing. I was lucky enough to meet with Mrsmorningwood and Mr. Morningwood in Florida over the weekend during a recent visit.

After much preparation by my hosts, they found us a Bombax to climb, just outside the Ringling’s Estate.

We meet early to beat the heat which reached about 98, with water and snacks we set our lines and up we went. Super glue was put on a branch to keep one of the climbers butt in place so they did not wander too much onto outer limbs. Once it was peeled away that climber was able to take several photos of the other climbers. (dang my memory card on my camera failed as I was loading the 50 or so pictures that I took )

Limb walking was easy on the tree, which has large diameter branches. This tree is used by several other climbers and groups for training so there was little deadwood in the tree.

From the heights we were able to climb to we were rewarded with views of the Florida Ringling’s College and University buildings, Ringling’s Estate and the Gulf of Mexico, all of which were only yards away.

After several hours of chatting and meandering about the tree, we called it a day.

Also while in the area, I spotted a grove a tree’s at a local park and on Sunday, I was again able to get into another tropical tree. That was a type of Banyon (I think) but I have to still identify it. I will share the location of that tree as there was a grove of about 5 that would be great for another rec climb. Plans are to visit the area and this time tree-t my hostess and host to a climb in those trees.

Thank again for all the fun and memories

JZ

Ps Mrsmorningwood has wonderful pictures – let’s hope she can post them of the views

I like the Blakes, its my favourite climbing knot.

I like sitting in trees too, in the attachment you can see what landed next to me last friday when I was finished my work.

I just inherited a Butterfly II, and I have a sliding D setup with the mickey mouse pulley from CMI. I was taught the "Machohuacan" (I'm sure I spelled it wrong), and tried it out last night and again this morning. It is fast and fun, and not for the amateur.

When I was still climbing daily, I used a blakes. I still am most comfortable with that knot.

Cool tree, JZ! I like that the Treebuzz community is getting together for these rec climbs! If I haven't sent out the invite, if anyone is near Charlotte, and wants to brave the swing I have set up in the back yard over the 70 foot ravine, just let me know!

Hey Jersey!

What a time that we had...
I admit it. It was my a$$ superglued to the limb. It's been months since I've been in a tree though and I'm afraid of heights. It takes me a while to get acclimated.

ok, you're right...I'm a wuss.

Next time I'll do much better. Promise!

I am SO bummed your camera card busted. You had some great pictures. <peeww....peewww>

Here are some of the best of mine. There are quite a few. I tried to be selective but it was difficult!
