Curious Guy...did you get an actual subpoena or were you contacted/retained by the attorney as an expert witness? There is no obligation to compensate somebody who is subpoenaed. It hasn't happened to me, but I don't imagine they would find a terribly helpful expert in such a circumstance.

Yes most times that I am called to testify, whether it is at a trial or at a deposition, that is done via subpoena from the attorney client or the opposing counsel. And btw, subpoenas can be resisted, overall or in part.
If you're working in Antarctica, no court is likely to force you to fly to Ohio on your own dime.
If you're asked by opposing counsel for volumes of evidence, supplying a lesser amount is often enough, and your prep time is covered by your own client.
Your testimony time in deposition is typically covered by the opposing counsel--after all,
they subpoenaed you. Many experts charge 2x their regular rate or more for testifying.
