Trango Cinch

I am thinking about getting a Cinch for a couple of applications. I want to try it in some SRT set-ups, but mostly for a laynard adjuster. For those of you who have them, do you like them or not? Also how do you commonly use them besides laynard adjusters? Can you use them in SRT in a similar way to a Grigri or Eddie for example?

I own two Cinch's; one as a lanyard adjuster, the other for SRT spar work and trunk belays. The Cinch or Grigri won't serve as well as the I'd or Eddy in work positioning scenarios. I feel the Cinch is superior to the Grigri. The Grigri is spring loaded to return to the open position.

How does the Cinch compare to the Grigri, I'd and Eddy for size? When you use it for a trunk belay, do you have some tupe of backup or is that not necessary?

The Cinch is slightly smaller than the Grigri. The I'd is the largest with the Eddy slightly smaller than it. I back up trunk belays with a Munter Mule or something similar.

Have you considered the Grillon as a lanyard adjuster? I've tried both the Gri Gri and Grillon and prefer the Grillon as it is similar to a micrograb.

I want to use it for more than just a lanyard adjuster. I think I changed my mind since my original post. My plans are to use it more for SRT applications, but I want something that can be used for a lanyard if I choose to do so. What is the difference bewteen the Grillon and the Grigri? I have been looking and I can only find the Grillon sold with the attached rope, which I dont have any use for.... its too short for my liking.

Just open the grillon and remove the rope, and replace it with New England Fly, thats works.

The Grillon is the entire lanyard/adjuster combo. The adjuster on the Grillon is just a modified Grigri. The Grillon adjuster does not have the flip-out lever, but rather a rounded plastic knob. Also, it comes with a screw through the cheek plate to keep it on the rope, even if there's no carabiner through it.

The lanyard is available in many lengths from 1m to 5m.

The Grillon is a nice lanyard IMO. If I were to get another, I would get the Grillon Hook that has a double-locking snap pre-installed at one end.

some problems have occurred with the cinch lever breaking in tree work situations. My friend called Trango when it happened. They asked if he had read the instructions. Something about it not being used as designed. Maybe rope diameter incompatibility or something. I'll try to find out exactly what Trango said.

The release lever is plastic and of course it will break if wedged against something while in the open position. The lever will tend to stick open when dirty, just like anything you have to clean it regularly. As far as not intended for use in trees; #15 in the instructions lists rappeling as a function. This is the same as using a postitioning lanyard in an SRT format.

I use my Cinch mostly for spar work, and I think it works really well for that application. I've also used it as a belay/climber lowering device before, and prefer it to the Grigri in that application as well.

No, I haven't gotten my hands on the new catalog yet. However, that reminds me that I should probably replace my old Cinch with the new CE approved version.

And I'm back in the States for the summer. Hopefully I'll see you at the St.Louis conference, if I can afford to come.
