Tragedy in my hometown

Wow, thanks for the extra info. Brian, let me know if you want any help on a presentation or need a hand with anything. It will be time well spent if we can prevent something like this from happening again.

Ok,

I got to talk to the fire chief that was at the site of this accident.

He did not know how long it was from the time of the accident till they were dispatched to the scene. But by the time they reach the scene, the guy was unconscious and most likely already dead. He most likely died from asphyxiation, was already blueish when they arrived So even if another tree company was called in, it would have been to late. The climber's own ground men were most likely the only one who could have rescued him in time.

They were in process of removing a tree behind a house. And were using a large tree (uphill) as a lowering point. I assuming the were tip tying their tree into the larger one. But the did not set up the lowering point correctly. The limb there were lowering from was a low laid out limb, and about same diameter of limb they were taking. When they took the one top, it snapped out the lowering limb. The broking limb struck the climber, and got him twisted up in the lowering line, it appears the piece being lower fell on opposite side of the tree being removed. The lowering line and the limb kept him pinned upside down, with the line running across his neck and chest.

Unfortunately it did take them 2-3 hours to get him down :( Mostly due to the distance off the road...and therefore couldnt reach him with the first ladder truck.

I forget to say. The chief also said the tree companies equipments was not up to safety standards. He commented that the carabiners looked like key chain ones, no where near rescue grade.

They were doing the tree as side work for another tree guy in that development (who mostly just drops trees)...we have given this guy logs in the past, actually the neighbor's trees.

Scary stuff right there. It is a shame that guys think that they can do any job put in front of them without proper training. Still, if you look at the reality of the world we live in this kind of thing will always be a constant. The one good thing that we can take out of this is good rescue training for the first responders.

You cant fix stupid, but maybe you can save them.
