Tough Jobs: Tree trimming business

I don't see the corelation between taking chances and being safe. I certainly don't get why you would try to get into someone's head like that. I am not trying to defend anyone here but perhaps the reason hollen is so bent out of shape is because the injustices of a different thread were never really finished. It was left to just die. Mean while when a man is not on the forum to defend himself all beat him to no end. Some one from that area contact this fellow and invite to the forum and just perhaps a change can be made. But discussing a poor guy to death when he has no knowlegde and a change can not be made is like spitting into the wind.

[ QUOTE ]
why so hostile? you're not gods gift to tree work, you do know that right?

[/ QUOTE ]

Not Hostile my man just a tad bit upset that ya'll with your I'm all mighty papers tend to think your better than the rest of us. But yet ya'll don't follow through with your ethics, and you know who I'm talking bout.

Your right, I know I'm not gods gift to tree work, and thats what makes me better than most cuase I know I can learn something from everyone be it just a silly throw bag trick or a way to move logs.

[ QUOTE ]
and you do also know that not everyone views the world as you?

[/ QUOTE ]
wouldn't even want them to my how boring of a world would that be?

[ QUOTE ]
you have made quite the name foor yourself here, not one aspect of which is good.

[/ QUOTE ]
And you think I give a rats [bad word] what you think? You got something to show me than I'm all ears, you want to try and put me down than lets tango baby. All I'm doing is bring real light about the stuff really going on.

[ QUOTE ]
not quite sure that veing certified means were the tree police? who we gonna turn to? treebusters? you shouldn't bash people just because they are educated. take a page from their book maybe!

[/ QUOTE ]

Well seems my education is a bit higher than your, cuase I read the ethic code, I even posted a link to it for some like you, that seem to forget what you took on to your shoulders when you got your crets. In it it states that you as a certed person are supposed to trun others in for such work or you too are in violation of the code. Are you a man or honor or a man of buzz buddy.

[ QUOTE ]

And just what am I supposed to learn from him HOW TO TOP TREES shoooooot I was topping trees in the 80's while he was still triing to get a date. Than all of a sudden from no where NAA said topping trees was bad and guess what we listened. Course now it's the ISA and we need to take test and pay them wads of money to knid of prove we know what we are doing. YEA GO FIGURE
[ QUOTE ]
good luck to you! and hopefully we will see you in February @ New England Grows, or in July @ ISA in RI. only 5 or so hours from Jersey!

[/ QUOTE ]

Could be Boston as I don't belong to any ISA chapter so that would make my old [bad word] able to go to any of the so called super climber events. Besides I have family in RI. little guy known as R.E. BARRY PUMPS INC., is my uncle. Though I'm not sure I'm quite good enough to compete with pros like ya'll.

I think I missed the posts etc. with all of the arrogant certified dudes!? can someone please fill me in on whats up with that ?
I took the NJ CTE not just to increase my knowledge but as a marketing tool ..... not to get all puffed up. As I stated on a prior post The day after the "test" I was no better a tree person than the day before. It is just a step in a life long pursuit of improving oneself . Day by day>
My feeling is the best way to change ethics is to empower the client base, arm them with knowledge needed to make good decisions about their trees.

Mean while when a man is not on the forum to defend himself

[/ QUOTE ]
he might not post everday but needless he is here be it him or his eyes he's here and he knows whats being said. He's not saying nothing cuase he knows he is in the wrong and it could be, if certed emailed, his whole work to get gone in the blink of an eye.

Well stated taitree. Empowering the client base and using your cert as a marketing tool are exactly what a person should do. I believe that I do become a better tree person everyday I try to further my education. As far as a worker that may plateau but knowledge is power. Doing the right thing with a cert is key.

AGREED!! Forgive me for getting a bit philosophical. WE should take inventory of ourselves everyday. How did I do today as a husband, father, friend, arborist etc? was I an [bad word] today? How can I do better tomorrow and the next day!

btw hollen I was not talking about the topper I was talking about the start of this post, about a guy who was getting his 15 minutes of fame. And I hope you don't think for 1 minute I was turning away from the topping post, just seemed no one would answer the correct questions. The man dicussed in this thread may just turn around if someone were too not offensively attack him. We have to remember safety came from tragedy. Something most likely happened first to create a secondary reation for many of the regs that are in place today. Thank goodness we are constantly evolving to better protect our industry.

if the CA test is so easy and you already know more than us, by all means go take it! without the study guide. Want a real challenge? come up to MA and take our exam........or maybe you don't like tests for different, more personal reason?

the NAA is now the TCIA

you take 60 foot tops on rope and saddle on the regular? if this is true, I will be down this week to view it! I can think of one residential job a month where thed space and tree would allow. and even then its not the best idea.

that top I took was 55'-65' where I was, was all of 24" wood. you da man!

you say your holier than thou, but won't name names of guys who top? if I see a known CA in my area doing shoddy work, bet your bum ill say something to him and whomever else I need to.

take care!

I am the unethical tree topper that hollenreich is blazing on in every post, regardless what the post is about. I am so happy that I have caught his eye and attention! You have to read the bradford pear post from a while back to know where he is coming from. He has discovered that all of us CA's are in some kind of cult brotherhood where all we do is kiss each others butts and ignore the ethics policies. I hate it that he has figured us out so easily.

Truth is that I have been holding my proverbial tongue on here because this place has become a forum of hundreds that has become completely dominated by the judgement and negativity of about 6 people. I dislike all the hatefulness, threats, and counterproductive thought of the few people who make this forum a place where I spend less and less time everyday.

Hollenreich, I don't know you from Adam, but I have enough respect for all the people on here, including YOU, to stay away from the foul personal attacks you enjoy so much. This is the first time I have given you any real response, because I choose to not engage with someone who has no respect for anyone on here.

Arboriculture has a lot of rules. Pruning rules, safety rules, business rules, etc. The rules we follow today are very different from the rules of 10 years ago. The rules 10 years from now will be very different from today's. I would even go as far as saying that I would not be surprised one bit if rounding over bradford pears within certain parameters will be an acceptable practice someday. I have said my peace about the pears in the other post, and if anyone wants to take Hollen's advice and report me to the ISA, then I will take whatever comes of it. I will not, however, let someone drag my pride in my company, and my work, and my credentials I have worked so hard for, and my mental well-being down with some childish posts on this site.

I will keep occasionally checking in on Treebuzz, I like Tom and Mark, and a few friends I have met on here, but I can't waste my time daily trying to defend my reputation from a few people who obviously know a lot more about the rules than me.

Noel Boyer

Noel its all good, your still Noel Boyer the old warrior-destroyer.Youve taken a stance and not backing down because you believe in something.Even the haters got respect that deep down.Thats how change happens your not turning your back on your words.I dont know if I agree with your views on Bradford Pears not sure yet.I know something has to be done other than just removing them,I would love to do a case study on the subject.Find a bunch of mature ready to split BPs-let some be,drop crotch some, cable and prune others and top the others 50 percent.Wait 3 years and see which ones have aquired the most damage.Thats the only way this can be solved is thru research.Hollenreich I do agree with you regarding the way people blast guys who dont follow all the rules. Its funny but im sure most of the guys blasting them did it the same way at one time-bogus if you ask me-hypocrite is a good word.Instead of looking so high and mighty why not educate others. It looks so weak put others down who really dont even know any better. Its like being around a guy who use to smoke and quit they are the worse-guess theyre running from who they are deep down -whatever its all lame.Im sure ive been just as guilty.Anyway hope all of us can learn something from this junk and bite our tong a little and maybe handle things in private.I doubt it!

I will tell you a funny story! About two years ago I took a very cool seminar on wood decaying fungi With Dr. Chris Luley. An awesome seminar. WE talked about a lot of things that day <not the least of wich was mitigating tree loss or failure do to decay in trees. We spoke about drilling, the resistograph and pull testing. He mentioned that the Germans were talking about the tree as a lever in the wind and if you had a really long lever with a certain amount of decay ,in luie of removing the tree, you could shorten the lever??!! What if all of the cuts do not fall within the one third rule??!! BLOW IT UP?!! SHHHH don't tell any one but I have a couple of trees on my own property that were severly damaged in a straight line wind , I refused to part with them so I made some "NON-Ideal" cuts.
Am I as an arborist incapable of managing these trees in this condition??!! Don't Doctors and Patients way lesser of two evil type decisions all of the time? I am playing devils advocate here lets have fun with this.
I have never been a black and white guy!! I love greys and pastels!!!!!!!!!

I get it... Hollenreich = Ekka!
thinking.gif
I think...

That is exactly the case. There are plenty of exceptions to the rules. There are many topped trees that need to be pruned and storm damage that leaves us with less than optimal choices. We do what we can to stay within the best practices.

Thank you for standing up Noel, I feel the same way.

I don't understand why some people have to get their point across by name-calling, we are adults here and everyone is welcome to voice their opinion or views. Just because someone is a CA doesn't always mean that person is elite or better than others. Not all tree workers are Arborist, nor are all arborists skilled and knowlegdable about tree work.
There are however, rules, regulations and safety standards set in place to keep workers safe.
Do some people work safe without PPE?
Do some people not work safe with PPE?

I choose to wear my PPE........and I will work smart.

Not just because I have to, but because I want to.

We can't make a difference until we act.

Wow,this guy busts on arborists using tree wraps? I've been doing tree work for 25 years and I use tree wraps. I learned from tree men who did tree work 35 Years before me and they used tree wraps to take down some monstorous trees and they did it safely and efficiently. I also sometime use a lowering device and I also sometime use our Crane. I understand these guys in the video were cowboys but don't be critical of "old school" because "old school" works and can be as safe and sometime more practical than "new school".

[/ QUOTE ]

I don't think the gist of his post was to bash "old school" techniques. What I think is being communicated on this thread over and over again is:

1. You can be "old school" and be safe.

2. If we are going to move ahead as an industry, we must promote safe working practices, and a public perception of our industry as a legitimate, valuable service that is needed in our urban forests.

3. No matter what is written, there will be numbskulls who perceive comments written about the lack of PPE equate a sense of superiority that is inexorably linked with ISA certification. (Hollenreich, I'm directing this at you, although I doubt the word 'inexorably' falls into your daily vernacular, it means inevitably)

Never in any of my post have I ever said I know more than anybody. And what makes your state ca test harder than say NJ's or MD's. Not that I don't like test, just anit got no use for them, I'm a hired gun I know my job is to just come in and do the big ones be it prune or take down. I at this moment, am locked in with 4 different companies, the cert means very little to them as it's more important I know to rig and do my job safe, they carry the certs. Besides the money one has to put out to get and to retain make very little sence to me.
