Tornado tree work in Maryland, News video.

Hey David I like your style and that is not kissing a$$, it's word dude. Your work looks very exciting and very stimulating to the brain with lots of planning. Now where are the gloves, the postman must be liking them more than me. Just joking I know your busy schedule. Nice work dude.

Looks like a fun toy.

Guying to ground anchors woulda been a lot cheaper, but maaaybe less fun.

Are you serious?

the leaner was secured to the big tree it was laying on, with 7/8" bull rope, block and hobbs. in case it wanted to stand back up after it got lighter. (most expected outcome, due to the angle and huge root plate)

tree was also secured to the OTHER tree removal trunk with dmm block and alum bollard on grcs. 3/4" bull line. In case it wanted to drop down, it would assist the other bull rope.

If you were referring to the k-boom in the last picture, it was just there at the end, loading logs that were too big for the chipper. before that, it was in upper yard, attached to the big chipper with the 40 yrd box on it.

We used my brother and his crane for the dismantle of the crown, as I knew our crane would not be tall enough, nor be able to take such large picks. Always nice working with him, as he is a climber for his company as well and a great crane opperator.

I would edit and post a video of this job while I'm still excited about it, but I have other things in-line before I get to that, like sending out boxes of gloves.

(Of which, I remembered them for a long time and was about to do it many times, but actually did totally forget about it. Thanks Swing for reminding me. I'm sick today with some kind of head/sinus problem, so maybe if i get done the estimate write ups and invoicing I'm behind on, I'll box up some gloves.)

OH! Is that what Guy is talking about. Thanks Brendon.

I actually gave that as an option, I said with enough money, it could be done and I would be willing to do it. But it would be very expensive and there would be cables in his yard everywhere. H.O. didn't want to consider it.

Good estimate on the weight Brendon. Seeing the weights of the picks we took and what is left, weight of whole tree was around 40,000 to 60,000 lbs. Best educated estimate is 56,000 lbs.

Giving options is part of risk assessment; well done! I also would not want to guy that particular tree if it was mine, but arborists give information, and the owner decides. As for cost, it would be climbing, attaching 2 cables to the tree, then digging 2 holes and filling them with concrete, and anchors, then attaching the cables to it.

Sounds way cheaper than the removal, but again was not the best choice for this species and situation. Brendon, if you read the A300 and BMP on this, you may get over your shock at the suggestion.

after one LONG day, 39 yds of chips and a load of upper logs to haul away; two trunks remain to be felled and hauled away another day.

a good video coming some day.... Even got good aerial footage from my brother that flew his paraglider around the tree the day before the removal. Clearly the biggest tree around that area.

Nice touch with crossing the ropes into a X.

thank you for noticing.

there are some "tree services" in the area and I was worried one could come in the yard at night and climb or cut the ropes and steal them.

So, ground men took them to the opposite tree, wrapped them many times with many knots, so that a theif would have to be there a very long time un-doing them.

The X just happened, but that IS why I decided to take a picture.

Guy, I would do the guy cables a bit differently, but I don't want to talk about it right now. I can talk about it when i ever get to install them on a huge white oak with root rot. I bit more than just static cables and more of them.

On that Tulip tree, minimum of three cables total, in case the roots decay from being bent on the side that did not lift, years later. If I could get cables thick enough, three might do it. But likely I'd use 6 cables, with my "special addition" to the system, with huge concrete anchors in the ground.

On the subject of setting trees back up.... A big silver maple in a stream bottom uprooted in a hurricane remnant last year. I did a drastic crown reduction to it, while it lay on the ground, then flipped it back into place with the skid loader. the root plate was huge, 30 foot radius maybe. Not near any houses or any targets. A low area in a community. I ran the idea past the Home Owners Association first. Can't wait to see what it is doing this summer. Kind of a little test.

Right on X, thanks for the photo's! Glad a landscaper didn't get that job, wow what a mess. Looks like you busted out the stick crane for some of those pics eh? Or is that the K fully extended???

Beautiful setup and rigging, safe work as always. Glad to see your still climbing, putting on a clinic! I can't wait for the video man... probably have to wait a year or two but, yeah I know how it is, anyhow were all waiting.

The look is perfect, love the hi-viz, and F'in love the Duct Tape! (Wish you would have your ol' lady stitch a BIG 'X' on that back pack.

I hope your bro got some nice shots from the glider.

Way to make the money and keep all happy and safe. Keep setting that bar higher and higher, gives me something to shoot for.

Swing,
Once again, no glove packing today. Got a emergency call, large section of a beech tree fell onto customers roof. So I had to work. Now I'm even more sick....

This its the second time I've suggested a beech tree needed cables and they don't do it, then in 1 to 4 yrs later, major failure. Real shame, it ruins those trees, they go downhill from there.

X I totally understand the pressure you are facing, I am off to the New England area for four weeks to check out some treework american style ( and learn a thing or two ) so hold off I will call ya and make different arrangements that will be easier.

X you can take the Bix under your wing and hone his skills, he certainly is young enough and full of enthusiasm. He might even grow up to be a mini x. On the other hand he might just drive you nuts with all his clowning around.

News media is tough stuff to negotiate, that's for sure. All the well-intentioned comments in the world and you could still be made to look uninteresting by the editing room process.

I joined Toastmasters last year for this reason. I think I might use my education allowance at work to take a PR course next year too.

Saw the news coverage tonight from the east coast, what a mess in some areas. All the best to you Xman, and everyone else out there, getting 'er done safe over the coming weeks.

To X and all the men and women on in mid Atlantic area stay safe with the work and heat.

Going down to Waldorf Md the 13th to help out the sis and her neighbor. Told her about the tree guys on the buzz, but the family, beer, crab cakes, and a little money won me over.I want to give her numbers of good tree services in that area,so if any of you work in or around the Waldorf Md area phone number or pm them that would be great.
