Today's badasz tree...

Re: Today\'s badasz tree...

Nice job.

How long have you used the spectra line and how do you like it? Do you use it for blocking down also? Thanks.

Re: Today\'s badasz tree...

Mike, sorry for the 3 week late reply...

No, a zero stretch (well, near zero) stretch line should never be used in any situation where shock loading occurs.

Today, we didnt have it, so used the normal 9/16th db and GRCS to suspend a 60 foot, 12" dbh hemlock from a cedar (codominant, so we guyed the two leads together), then used the chipper winch to help get it to the upper level. Actually, the 9/16 held the retrievable block, and 1/2 db was the lowering line. Perhaps it was a bit small for the operation, but there was no shock loading, and I doubt the hemlock weighed over 1500 lb, so that is well within the rope's 5-1 SWL versus tensile.

Then, we did a 125 foot dead doug fir, and I dropped a 21 foot log into the down sloping woods to save the lawn. (later we dropped the 66 foot butt onto the lawn with near zero impact, which we cut to 2 32'10"ers, which scaled out to 900 board feet.)
Then we set a retrievable block in another big fir, and GRCS'd the downhill log up in the air, then pulled it out with the chip truck.

The spectra woulda been better, but it wuz at home....

Re: Today\'s badasz tree...

Heard a noise outside my window today, and found a removal operation going on down the block. The climber's name is also Travis (no relation).

Re: Today\'s badasz tree...

I hate throwing something with a dog leg on it. It can do crazy stuff, sometimes.
