Throwlines or throw-knots

I built a device using a fishing reel with 20lb line, a piece of fishing rod, and a sling shot. The sling shot was mounted to the handle of the fishing rod, above the reel.

I used the sling shot to launch a small, homemade shotbag that my wife made for me.

It worked ok, but line breakage and snags were problems. It was also tough to see that tiny throwbag once it was 50 feet or so off of the ground.

The idea came from something I saws on New Tribe.

BOTH!

I will generally use a throwline and I have a small bag with two lines ready for deployment, also contains a rubber mallet, binocs, xtra throwballs, keychain biners, lighter, candy bars, and anything else I can squeeze in there. As I leave the truck I grab the bag and I can usually have a line up before the chipper is greased.

But...just yesterday I found myself in a jam with TWO throwlines stuck about 80' up and no other spares. I'm usually pretty good but of course there was a crowd going "Ooh, you make that look so easy". So without missing a beat, I let the groundie waste time with impossibly stuck lines and I quickly tie a thrower's knot and LAUNCH it about 30' to the second branch. Then I begin the tedious but not impossible task of recrotching all the way up to the pencil tips to get me throwballs.

Yes, both are critical for efficient canopy access.

I had to do it the old fashioned way today also as the understory was just not cooperating with me today. Also the three phase on the other side wasn't an option. I did have "a moment of clarity"(thanks to MC's input to this thread) when I finally realized a 16oz throw weight and a small carabiner clipped to the eye splice easily replaced the noose knot. It was on the ground."DOH!" Would have saved a ton of time...much easier/faster process to repeat.
