three strand eye splice

So I'm trying to break into splicing. I got a treemaster (I think) 1/2" hard-lay rigging rope recently. Its been a tough start. I've seen a number of instructional step by step pictures, and videos, but I am still having a hard time.

Anyone have an exceptionally easy to follow one that they know of and have a link for?

Thanks,
Sean

What Norm said. That stuff is HARD. Some practice on a softer rope will get you over the hump.

You could also start by finishing a rope end with a back splice. The lay will be much softer than if you start right off with an eye.

Absolutely. Even go to the hardware store and buy some of the 3 strand yellow, cheap stuff. This will let you get the motions down before you step it up to the hardlay ropes.

You chose the absolute hardest lay 3 strand to get started with. Try splicing up some 3/8" New England filament dacron 1st. I'm presuming you looked at Samson's splicing instructions?

Purchasing one of these will make splicing the hard lay much easier.

I thought that I had that same tool, then I realized that I as using a Bic pen. It was blue ink. Is that easier or harder than black. Medium point BTW.

It is a tough one to splice. I did buy some soft lay hardware store stuff to practice on, but got sidetracked before really trying.

I could get it through, but it was tough, but the harder part from the videos that I watched was getting it through the right spots, even with pausing and playing.

I don't think that it is supposed to be that tough, only its hard to do from a computer screen to rope.

I did have some bad bunching up.

i like a philips head and a ball point pent and some masking tape. it helps if you "open" the rope a little before each pass through. i spliced my steel ringed friction saver. i'm not dead yet. the pattern is 2 then 1. there should always be two strands on one side and one strand on the other. then step on it and roll it around to smooth the splice out. be sure to "tighten" the splice up after each pass by pulling on the strand hard. ohh and the rope gets "harder" as the splice progresses. make sure you don't untwist the strands when you are splicing them. if you can get the eye started right the rest is just a repeat.

I learned to splice 3 strand from Brion Toss. To me he has the best method.

I splice Samson ProMaster 3 strand and use them as lanyards all the time. Tried hard lay TreeMaster one time...big mistake.

Big wooden spike, not much use except for spreading three strand, which makes sense because that is what it is made for. I don't know what it would take to splice Tree-Master quickly, but if you take your time, open the lay gently, and keep the twist in the strand nice and even so it doesn't flatten, the stuff splices like a champ. If you're doing a crown splice, keep a constrictor on until the crown is complete and you're going to start the first set of tucks.
I made a lanyard which has been great, well worth the fuss, and a adjustable ring/ring saver, which turned out well if I could only come up with a tree which needs a big-arse friction saver.
Splicing rope for it's own sake, total dooooosh.
