That was my problem with this one. It needs to open up more to get the leverage (especially on the bottom cam) and that increases the friction. It completely baffled me on that KM Max until I set it up for another rope, and then moved it back to the KM. Voila! It was more open with a little weight on it, and I realized how badly I was doing things wrong. I kept concentrating on that distance between rope and cams, and like Jaime said... the way the cams rotate does more than just change the distance. It's all rather complicated and strange, but it works! You just have to forget what you think should work, and figure out what does work, even if it doesn't seem to make sense.

This is not something I see happening. The main attachment ring on the Akimbo is also the pivoting lower friction block. Changing the length from the ring to the pivot point to make room for a swivel, would also change how everything else works.
This tool is so good and compact as it is, and even without a swivel, will rotate easily 180º.
 
So I just wanted to put in my two cents about rope options. I really didn't get on with the akimbo until I started using it on the sterling work pro that I have. It is a demo diameter at 12.5. I have truly come to love the device when on this rope. Great diameter for it. It sounds like they will be producing it after certification goes through. Keep an eye out. It'll be worth a try.
 
When I saw your video on this I was thinking of getting one of the other but this device has allot of common sense but in and I am waiting until this comes out before buying a mechanical device I will watch this very close and if you need up front buyer I am in!!

This helped by the way, I moved to 3T 2B and it boat anchored again, moved to 3T 4B and it lost a lot of drag, but it won't grab unless I manually lift the top arm (not willing to take a flying leap to see if it grabs on its own eventually) the rappel speed is perfect though.

Just got some more rope options to test on, I will post the results.
 
Steve (middle name john) sent me a piece to try and while I could get it to grip in the adjustable Bone, It was very hard to release and then would drop and stop.
It seemed to work reasonably well with the BOLA as a lanyard.

The design didnt seem like it would i like the compact design and will just add a swivel to my bridge. I have been in a couple situations that it would be way more pleasant because of my positioning angles and when using a secondary climbing rig. I really like the prototype i have been using and will more than likely purchase one when it goes to full production. Thx for the response. Also i was able to lube the metal shims with 3 in 1 oil and seem to have it moving quite easily.

Probably should have lubricated with graphite .... being it's a dry lube.
 
The one crytough has has steel shims in it. Those things suck. I tried dry lube on them ant it didn't work. Oil works, even though it does gather crud. If I get the chance I want to replace those shims with ptfe plastic ones. In the final version shims shouldn't be necessary at all.
 
I love following this thread - about 5 years ago I was a mentor and coach for a high school robotics team for the First competition http://www.firstinspires.org/robotics/frc

It was a lot of fun, pushed our design and collaboration power, and very stressful.

The most frustrating part of every design and challenge was the unintended and unforeseen consequence of every engineering and design change.

My hats off to all those developing and testing this product - I can't wait to purchase the final production unit.

With every flaw and frustration comes an opportunity for gaining knowledge and a novel approach to solve a unique problem

Tweaked my back last week and had to take a break, now that i am back testing again - Question: do the later versions of the Akimbo have a spring to lift the top arm automatically? I ask because this one does not, and even when it seems to be dialed in, sliding and gripping with the right force, I still have to lift the top arm by hand to get it to engage. Is this expected, or am I just off of the sweet spot where it should engage on its own as soon as it's pulled down?
