Well that sucks... who do i talk to to get a rope approved for a 325 lbs climber? And thats before gear... :(

Good thing I didn't preorder one

So based on the manual I can’t use any of my ropes..
Yale Aztec (I know same rope, but not specifically listed)
Tachyon (seriously not on the list?!)
Kernmaster
Velocity (again really?!)
Samson 16 strand..

Guess I’m not a cool kid when it comes to ropes
Not enough Yale bozo.....

Nothing personal obviously, but Tachyon has way too much elongation for me to take it seriously. I would not run anything on it, and definitely would not drop $ on an Akimbo if I was going to use it with Tachyon...

I dropped money for KK2s then found that my loggers were too wide in the footbed. I emailed Dale about it and he got to the point - why would I buy carbon fiber gaffs and then stick them on the heaviest bricks I could find? That's what I feel like when I think about pairing an Akimbo with Tachyon.

I have a hank of Imori too.. my main point is with all the time why such a narrow scope of ropes? I’m fine if they are suggestions, but a product that can only have such a ALLOWED list certainly raises a eyebrow..

Feels like ZK-2 distal vr 2.0.

Between the time the Akimbo PDF Manual was written and now, there may be more ropes that have been added to the RockExotica web site's (currently) unpublished list of approved ropes. Unfortunately we were not informed as to the weight limits or rope issues, at the same time the pre-orders became available. For some, that may now be a deal breaker.

I'm also looking forward to it adding a couple of inches to the crotch rope!

The list is just ropes they've tested it on so that they know what weight limit to assign the configuration based on when it starts to slip. It's a cover our ass thing... if you use a rope not on the list and your fat ass slides all the way to the ground because you didn't test the combo yourself, first, they ain't liable for your broken assbone.

Use whatever damn rope you want... just test it at five feet, not fifty feet. I promise you, you'll easily be able to find a rope that will work. Most half-inch ropes, I couldn't get my 200 lb. ass to budge the thing more than a foot before it just held me there. Slack tending might not be as smooth, but then, neither is a RW/hitch combo.

The listed weight limits are when the rope slips, not when the device breaks. You aren't going to break anything but your ass with it, and only if you have a "here, hold my beer and watch this" moment.

But, hey... if y'all want to panic and start crying, already... I'm ok with that. Increases everybody else's odds of getting one early on, if all the chubbies freak out and cancel their orders.

There's nothing wrong with crying dude...

I resemble that remark.

Seriously, though, that was a great post. So if I'm reading correctly what you are writing, the problem is not that Rock Exotica thinks the device will somehow break in use with climbers above the stated limits, it is that they will likely be slipping down the rope in a unreliable way. I hope that sentence makes sense. In which case, maybe keeping a hand on the down rope coming out of the bottom of the device would be all that is needed to bring a bigger climber to a stop in a reliable fashion.

Thanks, Jeff.

You know, I have a 1/2" rope that might be a good one to try, if you're a big feller... KM 3 Max, the big, blue & white one. That thing is fatter than my 16-strand 1/2" ropes. I couldn't get anything to work on that, SRT. I even used a RW and hitch with it, and it worked but would sometimes just come to a stop on descent. At the time, I was 230 with gear. I took the hitch cord off and descended with just RW, tether, pulley and 'biner. I was laughing my ass off. I use the rope for a speedline, now.

It didn't work at all with the GoFundMe Akimbo, but the RE one handles 1/2" ropes, so it might be worth a try. If I pick up the RE Akimbo, I'll try it. I can strap some logs to my harness to increase my weight, if it looks promising.

I want to see a video of that! I bought a hank of sterling htp 1/2” and had the same issue with the wrench. Cablely and heavy as f too. But I’m 165 in soaking wet wool

That's my goal for this year... I'm at 187 and haven't gained any this winter... would like to get back down to 165, myself.

Yeah, you'd think a 32 or 48 strand kernmantle rope would be slick enough for anything to slide on it! I'm convinced it's because that fat, parallel core is stiff at the larger diameters, and won't flatten out or flex from the bend in the rope like a skinny rope will. This rope isn't as stiff and cable-like as the big HTP, but it's still a no-go for me. Really nice rope, and stronger than hell.... 9,000 lbs. plus, if I remember right.

For the record, I am 265-275 with no gear (...at all ;-), and my one of my rope main ropes is tachyon. It is bouncier than I'd prefer, but it is the rope that was on hand when I needed a 150'. It works just fine in my gofundme Akimbo, my runner, and my wrench (hitch and zigzag). Everything I've ever climbed on has needed tuning and has had a learning curve, SRT and DdRT.

I will grant that I prefer Yale 11.7 and kernmaster, the other ropes I use at my main gig, or cougar and voyager, my side hustle ropes, to tachyon, but I'm also heavy, and I don't enjoy bounce. I'm looking forward to trying HTP, x-static, and KM3 max, maybe even PMI classic sport. But Tachyon is a perfectly serviceable rope, and it's really hard to even tell the difference DdRT (right, you SRTTSOOI on every tree, and you'll never use doubled rope again...tell me more about how you cut off your left hand when you found out about your right...sry, different thread). Someone on the lighter side might even prefer it.
