The small techniques that make a big difference...

Hello All,

In case it's not clear...I'm a recreational climber. I would imagine that the professionals here wonder what the heck anyone want to do this for fun...as it's "work".

The answer is that I like the mental challenge, the geometry, the variability of solutions, the gear, the rope, the appropriate knots, the people, and nature.

I used to be a scuba diver. Each weekend I'd hit Monterey Bay. After a while, I'd seen a good deal, so it came down to one new sighting would make the trip. I kind of feel that way about recreational tree climbing. It's all good, but deploying a new technique each time is a lot of fun.

So...this weekend I deployed a new technique that is quite small, but made made a big difference. I viewed a video where someone attached their throw bag to the end of their rope. They then tossed the end of the rope up an over an out of reach limb. I used this on my DEDA which is about 22', this worked great for setting up next progression up the tree. Of course, I could coil the DEDA rope and throw it, but with only 22', I needed length to reach the target. Small technique, but supremely effective.

Cheers!

I love my work because it is fun. And technical, gruelling at times and keeps me constantly thinking. I never have ti look at time, it just disappears. Mixing things up is awesome.
That is wealth, Islandarb! I'm a hunger relief worker. I've been doing it for 27 years. Not a single day has passed when I didn't wakeup excited about the day. In fact, I actually hold the belief that I don't want to do what I do for fun full time. I like the scarcity of play time. I look forward to the time off to go play...but the work is a friggin' buzz...as well as rewarding.
