The Hitch Hiker

banjo, as Mahk says in his article, the “barrel knot” is a relatively new term for a Double Overhand Knot. In Ashley’s Book Of Knots (The Bible on knot tying books), the barrel knot is a completely different knot and is used to join the ends of two small diameter lines.

Paul, thanks for the info. I know that the users of the HH will really like the 10 mm beeline.

Looks more like an anchor bend. The knots on the tree motion bridge are double over hand knots.

Agree, it's essentially an Anchor Bend tied into itself, except it's reversed. Like Chris said if you loosen it a little and slip the upper turn over the lower turn it's converted into a double overhand.

Also stated in the article (last page):

"...(it is interesting
to note that the structural component of Figure 5, the fisherman’s
bend/anchor bend/anchor hitch is also the double overhand knot)."

The article is long and detailed, but it is summed up in the intro, conclusion, and photos.

Thanks pctree, good to know that.

My dad likes my dog just fine, both of my dogs actually.
As far as the Dad thing goes, you're just jealous.

Done.

OK guys back on track.

Yesterday, I did a nasty dead White Oak removal with the Hitch Hiker and I got some great pics from it.

I'll upload them and start a new thread as well on Monday...got some good stuff to discuss.

We have a batch ready to sell however we cannot sell them till Yale Cordage has finished our 3rd party independent testing which should be next week. I am as eager as anybody to get these out there as I think they will be well received.

Two climbs into testing out the Hitchhiker, first climb wasn't a fair test I was lead climbing my way up a white pine so it was all scramble no fun. However the hitch worked very well. Second climb I put it through the paces, put a fixe pulley just below it, tended slack very smooth, then later I found out from Adrian (on fb) that I could simply flip it around and tend slack very nicely off the steel biner. went back to using the fixe, it makes it extra smooth tending.

Ascending SRT the HH just rode along with me, didn't need to hold it up with a lanyard or bungee. On sit back whatever slack is in the bridge drops you a few inches but no bigee. You could put a bungee or lanyard on your bridge ring and eliminate sit back for SRT.

Then I switched it over DdRT and that was excellent, seamless changeover, no HH configuration change. I was really pleased how the hitch behaved DdRT. Essentially zero sit back, very responsive hitch, and the hitch was amazingly cool on descent, clearly the HH is sharing friction with the hitch so cord should last longer and like I said, super responsive.

Back to the stopper knot discussion. I've tried a few, the unnamed one that Paul originally came up with is really the best. It's the easiest one to tie and tune to get your cord length just right. It's solid no doubt and very easy to untie after loading as Paul and others have mentioned.

After another climb on HH I realized that adding the fixe is not working out. If the fixe and HH get a little out of alignment while you're tending slack they tend to fight each other. So flipping the HH around so the spine is facing in is the best way to simply/effectively tend slack.

Ascending SRT with the HH today I tested using a bungee on my bridge ring to move the HH up a little better hands-free. That worked well. Attaching the bungee directly to the HH did not work.
